i find it really wrong that this country made a holiday named after a plunderer..he was basically a pirate and he contributed to genocide...even though it wasn't called that at the time. Columbus did not discover America nor any of the islands or continents that he sailed to. And the the education system in the schools teach my little brother this bullshit so i correct him and tell him Columbus was a murderer. He did nothing worthwhile during his life time. He is a thief and i am so glad that most historians agree. Lets name the victims of this so called explorer. Columbus was responsible for the countless deaths and extinction of the "Arawaks" Indigenous Indians of the Caribbean. He and his men raped their women, gave them syphilis which eventually drive them mad. The others he forced into slavery. This is most important because the these Indians were hospitable to him and his crew. This man was responsible for wiping out 3 million Tainos from the country now called Haiti. The same goes for the American Indians here in America.....so why is this murderer given a holiday...whats next Hitler day...right after "Yom Kippur" ? "nein, NEIN, NEIN".

It's not about Columbus anymore. It's about getting a day off from work. It would be difficult to talk people into giving it up that have had it off for so many years. I bet your mailman would have a completely different opinion than you.

I used to be a teacher, and I taught my kids the importance of Columbus Day. At one point in my life when I was militant and angry at colonization, I went on tirades, too, belittling Christopher Columbus. But now, despite you despising the guy, the Western Hemisphere wouldn't be what it is today if it wasn't for him. Do you think that the descendants of the slaves would be here now if he wasn't, which includes you and me?

And this is what I told the kids about Columbus Day: it is to celebrate the countries and the people that inhabit the Western Hemisphere.
