I've been using the muscle building workouts from the P90X system for a while now (not the whole system). I have been getting pretty good results but would like to work on lowering my body fat down a bit as it has recently gone up a bit. I wanted to use the interval workout from P90X as working out at home works best for me and outdoors isn't going to fly in the winter in Montreal.

Their formula is 20 seconds slow, 20 seconds medium and 20 seconds hard, which seems pretty good. But the whole workout is about 45 mins and a little over half an hour without warm-up and cool down. As far as I understood HIIT type workouts work best for about a 15 minute range, and if you are going longer than that is probably means you aren't going hard enough. Has anybody used this or have any ideas? The workout is one round then a 1 minute break and repeat the whole cycle. If I just stopped after the first round it would be about 15 mins, would this be better?

No, do what the video says. The one minute break is enough to reset and go. The fatigue is still there but your heart rate will sky rocket again (hence the interval). While P90x isn't HIIT, don't deviate from that work video or you won't see results at all. 1, 15 min. session of the interval video isn't considered a HIIT workout nor will it aide in getting you leaner as you desire.

never seen p90x, but it does seem to do aa great job; just stick with what they say. The classic HIIT protocols are not the only way of burning fat.
