I prefer Telemark skiing because I enjoy getting into the back country and the combination of downhill and cross-country skiing.

Fewer people, better scenery, quieter, fewer lines...

... and even more 'extreme' that 'Boarding' (Can Boarding even be called 'extreme' or 'outlaw' any more?)

there's no way of just deciding.. give em both a shot
i don't suggest buying all the gear all of a sudden. go to a ski hill, take 2+ days to try each one out. and go from there.

i do think boarders are limited in the terrain they can tackle. no moguls, shitty times if run get flat for a lil bit. but aside from that. i do both. more skiing than boarding. i prefer the 2 planks.

21bimtl has a great idea - most ski shops, and certainly the ones at most ski areas will rent you beginner equipement by the day or week. I am certain both The Summit http://www.summit-at-snoqualmie.com/info/winter/equipment_rentals.asp and Crystal http://www.skicrystal.com/1596.html both do

Almost all slopes have beginner packages complete with lessons - call to find out; then go try one one weekend (or two/three), the other on a different week.

    Good luck.

I totally go for the snowboarding. Love skiing too but i like the fun factor of snowboarding. I suggest you give both a try, and see what you like most.
just prepare yourself for a wet and sour ass after your first snowboard trial icon_smile.gif

Skiing is easier to pick up at first but it is harder to become really proficient. You will probably hate snowboarding the first few times you go, but after you get past the steep learning curve you will really start picking it up fast.

I started out skiing and then moved to boarding... I just think that it is smoother and more Zen-like... when you're carving through a few feet of fresh powder and it feels like you're slicing through clouds... man, that is an awesome time.

I started out skiing because that's what my parents do (well, my dad does both) and I was a natural at it. I attempted snowboarded and decided that was a bad idea. My brother and sister are snowboarders, so just give both a try.

Mrpandora and WyoLifter are correct, in that you will be in pain the first couple times after boarding, but after that you pick it up rather quickly.

ITJock makes a good point, in that telemarking can be fun from what I've heard from friends. But I have to emphasize that a boarder can go basically anywhere a skier can go, simply by snowshoeing to the same places. Obviously, it's a much different experience than telemarking, but it's so worth it for the glory of boarding through untouched powder in the back country. And I just plain enjoy snowshoeing, even if I don't have a board strapped to my back.

Agree with everyone here. I grew up skiing but moved to snowboarding last winter. First two days were hell, and then it just clicked on the third day.

And then it was pure heaven, I didn't want to stop.
