I'M CURIOUS: what does gay fitness community mean to you?

    I'm curious....whoa, it's been several years since I could say that...last time I was curious I ended up at a halfway house at 3 am with a divorced dad's finger up my icon_exclaim.gificon_biggrin.gif

    LOL, before I digress any further, i've found myself wondering lately why RealJock is called a gay fitness community when, largely, only one facet of the gay community is represented here, gay men? I know its main focus is gay men, but, why? Where are all the lesbians, trannies, and crossdressers, the under-represented denizens of the GLBT community?
    I know some of them are fitness minded too.
    I mean, some of the butch lesbians i've seen have better builds than men.

    Whatever, maybe this site has proven to be so judgemental that it has ran away everyone who doesn't fit a pre-set norm? For example, chubs, fems, and skinny don't really receive a warm welcome here.
    Are we so shallow that we are alienating everyone who isn't a buff gay man? Is that what RealJock means to you because that is what it's starting to mean to me.

    I dont think I have ever seen a lesbian, trannie, and crossdresser on here, much less seen one be run off.

    I would be curious to know if there are more or less separate "communities" of users on here: those that come mainly for the fitness, those that come mainly for the men, those that use for the forums.

    Well interesting question, but Guilty, I don't think the one you bring up is as curious as the one Caslon poses.....

    For me "community" just means (in this case) the interest that is shared. For a home community, its the ownership interest in a specific area. Here its an interest in fitness. For me its irrelevant whether someone is fit or not (only their interest in improvement via learning to become more "fit" by exercise and proper nutrition). We are all in various phases of "fit" and all can improve.

    Caslon's comment is intriguing. There are men who come on here for varying reasons. For those who are here to look at the men, they are "guests" to this community (LOL) and for those who are here for the forums (I wonder who that could be, Caslon) I suppose they could be a small community opting to participate
    with "our fitness community".

    I think all should be welcomed provided they are in good faith. If someone is here and acts inappropriately within this community (via the forums or otherwise), they must be banned from the community.

    I originally came to this site because of the words gay fitness. My workout was stuck on a plateau and I found a lot of help. While I was waiting for the results I became interested in the other facets of the site. So, now it varies from day to day. Sometimes I like to just look over guys profiles including the most delectable part, the pics. Then other days I want to find out a specific thing so I search through the forums looking and end up getting sidetracked into other topics. So, I guess I belong to all three communities.

    As for lesbians, trannies, and crossdressers, bring em on. There are many facets of fitness on this site for people with different needs.

    well, let's see, HK. I couldnt really participate in the fitness portion of this site because I have been on that stupid cancer therapy with my testosterone shut off for the whole time.

    I wasnt here for the pics. re: no testosterone, see above.

    That only left are the forums and the guys. These are the sanest forums I have seen on the net. I think it is the filtering agent of being interested in one's physical well-being. Not too many loonies are going to stick out a fitness program.

    I think a huge reason why this site only has a certain few types of people is because of the way it's marketed on the web. I remember first seeing ads for RJ on Myspace and it was just a simple picture of a muscled guy with copy saying something like 'fitness for guys -- Real Jock: Gay Fitness website.' When you advertise like that, what do you expect? Of course no lesbian wants to join the site, she knows she won't be represented well there.

    On a side note, I have to agree with GuiltyGear, that there are some seriously instense lesbians out there dominating the fitness industry. I take a japanese sword fighting class from one of the fiercest woman i've ever met. Her classes always kick my ass -- I only hope to be as in shape as she is...

    Caslon, I've never seen a crossdresser or transexual here, but part of my reasoning for mentioning them was more for symbolism than anything. Literally, they don't pop up here, but chubs, older, fem, and skinny do. From what I've seen, they aren't made welcome and they just disappear.
    My other reason for this thread was to discuss the prominate gay image of beauty. Its a bit skewed. Its all about the muscle these days and that is so shallow. It bothers me when guys on this site measure their total worth by the size of their necks and biceps. I can't help but wonder if the standard of gay male beauty is a bit oppressive when it should be liberating.
    With such a lofty aesthetic to obtain, who has time to work on humility, personality, and tact: the things that really matter?
    And, how many gay men are falling apart whilst trying to achieve perfection inefficiently, because the most important aspects of human perfection are so far removed from what a person looks like.

    Since I love a good analogy, here is some audio/visual to get your wheels turning.

    sorry, guilty. I am really bad at extrapolating from lesbian, trannies, and crossdressers to chubs, older, fem, and skinny. So I missed your point.

    Easy, Caslon, lesbians, trannies, and crossdressers are the black sheep of the gay community and chubs, older, fem, and skinny, are the black sheep of The RealJock community. Come on honey, I know you can agree with something I say, try it.

    I personally came here for a gay perspective in the realm of fitness. What I hoped it would be is what in fact it is. Like any gay online community (fitness, gossip, sex, culture, etc.) there are those who are here primarily for the fitness and sports aspect. There are those who are here just lurking. There are those who are here to promote their personal agenda. I knew that this was the case, so I focus on what I'm primarily interested in. I don't pay much attention to those who are more intent on misinterpreting what I or anyone else says. I value the opinions of others, even when I don't agree with them. They (including my own) are just opinions.

    I like the workout advice, the camaraderie, the diversity and wealth of knowledge here. I admit that the pictures can be more than just compelling and if they are anything, they are a great source of motivation for me to continue to workout and work harder.

    I also like the humor and sometimes wild threads in the forums.

    There are a lot of great men here and that alone is reason to be here. No I'm not the perfect bodied, hot, young, all around olympian, but I know that we all start somewhere. I certainly did. So if there's someone here who is overweight, underweight, whatever, they have the right to learn about and start a program by talking to and reading about those of us who are on our way to our goals or have already reached them.

    As I was told: "If you can't be a good example, you can always be a horrible, horrible warning!"

    Please keep this side men only. That why they call it Real Gay Fitness Jock, not Real Gay and Lesbian Fitness Jock and D-ke. I have every respect for lesbian, tranny , cross dresser but their issue are not the same with fellow gays . I dont think I wil remain in this site if we start discussing makeup, high heel and and bra. I hope I dont offend anyone.

    I don't get it, GuiltyGear. Seems to me you are reading too much (or too little) into this site. The way I see it, this is simply on online fitness site that happens to be geared toward gays. I must have missed the part where we were required to show our updated Homo License to sign up.

    And trannies and crossdressers often do not consider themselves part of the gay community anyway for various reasons--but that's their decision.

    As for anyone without the body of Adonis not receiving a warm welcome here, again I'm stymied. Seems to me anyone can post a reply in a forum regardless of body habitus or pics, so what do you mean exactly??

    You claim that this site "has proven to be so judgemental" and that "guys on this site measure their total worth by the size of their necks and biceps." Are you really so sure that's true??

    Are there other people on here who believe Guilty is accurate in his assessment??

    Hmmm...what it means to me?
    If it wasn't for this site I wouldn't be in the shape I am in at 41. I found this site and tracked down every possible workout that I could do with the set of Dumbbells that I had at home and a few other pieces of equipment.....once I built there I then had the courage to go into the gym and add on to what I was doing.
    The bonus of this site...it's having the hard work that I have done for myself be appreciated by others and to appreciate what they have done for themselves also.
    I have found this site to be very positive even on the cruising side.....yea there are always a few freaks but all in all this sites been very helpful for me.

    I'M HERE AND I"M A TRANSVESTITE! A VERY, VERY SWEET, SOFT, WEAK, SUBSERVIENT PRISS OF A GIRLY GIRL TRANSVESTITE!
    I LIFT...my silicone inserts into my corset cups;
    I WRESTLE...with my slips and petticoats;
    I RUN...pool tables in a mini skirt and four-inch spiked high heels, and sometimes my pantyhose;
    I THROW...like a girl;
    I CURL...my long beautiful brown hair into locks so darling;
    I SPRINT...away from mean tough bullies who want to hurt my pretty girlish face;
    I JUMP...into flouncy poofy ballgowns
    AND DANCE...in satin slippers
    I FLEX...my credit card in the Macy's lingerie and cosmetic departments;
    I SWIM...in perfume
    AND CLIMB...stairs for dress sales;
    I PUNCH...my groin pearls because I love that dull ache and the way it makes them retract into my pelvic cavity leaving my skirt flat in the front.
    AND I"M HERE
    because I love to watch big strong manly men and being around them or even just seeing them makes me feel ever so feminine.
    I am just one of the girls but the pretty one next door. My weenie is no bigger than any one of your pinky fingers. I'm a sissy for strongmen and a wimp around studs.
    I monitor this chat site to fantasize about playing head to toe dressup, dolling up to the nines as the princess of femmes, in front of a large makeup mirror, while in that mirror I see in a large bed behind me, two or more huge strong tough macho manly men making love and every now and then they smirk and snicker and wisecrack at my insignificant and barely there male anatomy; a constant and in-my-face reminder that I never was, am not, and never will be anything close to even a boy let alone a man. And then maybe we all go out for cocktails together. Whew, that was good!

    To me, this site means there is a place I can ask questions, get advice and read up on some great fitness routines. Personally, it has helped me a great deal.

    While I haven't seen any lesbians on the site, I would welcome them as long as they fit in and don't pick on others (that goes for the guys, too). There are a couple of transmen that I've seen. and a crossdresser would likely not post pictures in drag or come out about it here because it's not the point of this site, but I bet they are here.

    For me, this 'community' is about common interests in fitness and health, as well as thoughtful sports discussions; not whether or not you have a penis or what clothes you like to wear.

    Peace-
    JC

    Who defined "male and gay" as only "the same sexuality as Rujock?"

    I suspect I might have a lot more in common with an intelligent, in-shape Lesbian than I do with narrow-minded gay males who can't spell.

    create another site called Lesbianrealjocks.com if you find more in common with them, and if you do find more in common with them then why are you on this site.

    seriously there is nothing wrong with a site that is for men and for those who happen to be gay and into fitness. No one says it has to be all inclusive.

    Maybe I'm too hung up on labels, but if RealJock were marketed as "LGBT Fitness Health & Life" instead of "Gay Fitness Health & Life" there might be more diversity on the site.

    Despite the male fitness emphasis I find that forum members here represent a wide spectrum; for example, not everyone here self-identifies as a "jock" or even "gay" - but that's a whole other thread. But perhaps the relative lack of crazy on these boards could be construed as homogeneity. I'm all for diversity but sometimes find it overrated - aren't the forums entertaining enough, lol?
