A gay man who was savagely beaten after walking out of a diner in Fort Lauderdale recently died after lingering in a hospice bed for six months
Craig Cohen had his head repeated stomped on by two men against a street curb which crushed his skull
a second gay man was also assaulted by the same two men

.... but the Broward County Sherriff's dept refuses to pursue hate crimes charges for these dangerous men

After the recent video taping of another gay man being brutally assaulted in NY
It is becoming more and more clear how dangerous it is to be a gay man in America today .... we need hate crimes legislation immediately
and people who have the balls to USE IT

I know it's probably just an oversight, but lesbians get beat up and killed too, not just gay men.

I hope the gay people of Florida get their balls together and protest this shit loudly.

Exactly! A lesbian friend of mine was recently attacked in NYC. I hope the Florida Gay population raise their voices against this!
    Cheers,

I often eat at the very same restaurant/diner the late victim left when he was assaulted, called the Peter Pan, a local landmark. He was alone late at night, so the Broward County Sheriff's Office (BSO) thinks he was just a target of opportunity.

His 2 attackers were on drugs & alcohol, and may not have specifically been looking for a gay man, just any vulnerable person walking alone they could rob. This is a very heavily gay area, and the Peter Pan is very popular with gays & lesbians, so anyone leaving there late at night may well be gay.

Local gay groups, however, focus on the second attack these guys committed on a gay man that same night in that general area, as evidence that they were indeed targeting gay men. That victim escaped serious injury. But again, attack ANYONE at night in this area and there's a good chance he or she will be gay. Was that their plan, or just the coincidence of where the attackers were?

My partner & I were mugged last year in Wilton Manors (I chased them off with my cane -- LOL!), but we didn't think it was a gay hate crime, just simple attempted robbery. But we did discuss it in person with a BSO GLBT community liaison, who's also a friend of ours, just to make sure the incident was noted, in case it was more than we presumed it was.

Whether these attackers knew the murder victim was coming on foot from Peter Pan, and realized this increased the odds he'd be gay, remain speculative in my mind. I didn't know the victim, so I can't say if he projected his orientation so strongly that street thugs would recognize it on a sidewalk late at night.

It's difficult to judge this, even as close as we are here to the scene of the crime, and knowing the circumstances better than most throughout the country. At the same time, I assume GQjock who posted this from Fort Lauderdale has been to the Peter Pan himself, and can add his own observations to this.

I completely agree that lesbians are attacked as well for being homosexual
It just seems that lately I've heard a number of attacks that have been on gay men

And Red, Yes I have been to the Peter Pan diner many times
and Ft Lauderdale is a very gay populated area
but the mere details of this crime yell hate from the beginning
There is the fact that these men attacked another gay man on the same night
.... but even more important than that
The sheriff didn't even take into account that these men Stomped on this man's head multiple times?
    Crushing his skull?
I don't practice law but you can infer intent when a body comes into a morgue with 25 stab wounds rather than one
and if their motive was robbery ..... the shattering of another man's skull is the proverbial elephant gun on the mosquito

Bull shit they didn't know he was gay.... that's fucked up. And that's putting it lightly. When will these people wake up?

There was a dude killed here not too long ago. Was coming out of the gay bar, and got attacked by some dudes riding by in a car. They hit him so hard in the temple it killed him. But no, they didn't know he was gay...icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks for your perspective, regarding an issue about which I am still unsure. I see the arguments on both sides of this. The crime was clearly brutal & excessive, but was it because their victim was gay, or because the perpetrators were on drugs?

BTW, if you frequent the Peter Pan, perhaps we can meet there sometime. My partner & I typically go on a Monday night to meet with a dear lesbian friend of ours. We take a table for 4, so would you consider joining us?
