....when exactly would the changes take place?

    Next year?
    Five years?
    20 years?

Oh balls! Canada is the furthest thing away from communism, look at out dingbat Conservative Prime Minister.

I for one am pleased we have universal health care. Honestly fear the day when it disappears too. The problem is the losers that abuse it by going to the doctor everytime they get a little boo boo on their finger.

People need not be afraid, it's a good thing.icon_smile.gif

26mileman, trowelmonger was making a joke on the hysterical rantings of those that compare it to communism.

We just heard from Bill's transit friend. Her girl pal lives just across the border from here in the US. She has a well-paid job in Vancouver, and commutes every day. She's married to a Canadian and has complete access to our healthcare.

So, whenever she needs it, she just drives across the border into Canada to the Doc.

Guess what? She's completely against the same healthcare being available in the US! Seems many in the US feel health-care is a status symbol, and a privilege of the rich.

    Mercy.

My careful conclusion, based on much reflection, is that many americans are totally irrational and odious when it comes to discussing healthcare and immigration. And look what happens when you put them together

    YOU LIE!

Well I've read that the senate bill has a 4 to 5 year timeline before the benefits kick in. (In the news, I have not read the bill itself.) However, the taxes to pay for it begin in one year. Arguably reasonable, but it seems like a bit of electoral suicide.

Well, you did ask a very practical question.

Tax increases to pay for the plan I think could come online quicker than the press has indicated. If there is a surcharge based on income level, for many people that could come with the first quarterly estimated tax payment. Due the 15th of the month of the first month of each quarter.

If health insurance is taxed, that could come online very quickly. Your payroll processor would pick that up based on your W-4 status.

The rest would depend on the final form of the bill and whether any new agencies have to come online from which regulations would be promolgated. I'd guess those in Congress won't want to wait that long, but it will give them time to work through immigration legislation so they can bring those folks online when everyone else has to file to see what form of assistance -- if any -- of which they might qualify.

So who knows. The bill may pass then get axed if enough people are truly pissed off.
