So I checked out the thread about "some real philosophy" or whatever and saw how that degenerated quickly, and thought I'd try posting a quiz that I put to my friends on Facebook almost 2 years ago. I'd seen lots of those "getting to know me" type questionnaires before, but I found they're all kind of cookie-cutter and from one to the next I never felt like I learned much new about the people answering them anymore. So I thought up some questions to dig around in people's psyches a little, maybe find out where their priorities are, what they're made of, etc. I wrote some of them to be challenging-- there are several that I'm a little uncertain about asking, let alone answering myself. I hope people will take an "in for a penny, in for a pound" view on it, though. I'll post my own answers sometime tomorrow or the next day.

    So...

    I) If you had to give up one of your physical senses to preserve the others, which would choose you give up?

II) If you had to lose all *but* one of your physical senses, which one would you choose to keep?

III) If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?(That's not necessarily one 'food,' it's one 'meal'-- for instance: an omelette, toast, coffee & OJ, or a steak, fries, salad & beer-- replacing every meal every day.)

IV) If you knew you were about to enter an hour-long repeating loop of time over and over for the rest of time, how would you spend that infinitely repeating hour?

    V) If you could choose the manner of your own death, how would you choose to die?

VI) If you had to choose between drowning or dying of thirst which would you choose?

VII) If you had to choose between dying in pain, or dying alone, which would you choose?

VIII) If you had to choose between being liked-- but not respected-- by your friends, or respected-- but not liked-- by the larger community of your peers, which would you choose?

IX) If you could send a brief (1 or 2 sentences) message back in time: who would you send it to, and at what time, and what would it say?

    X) If you could go back in time with the technology to make any one alteration to your own DNA in-utero, what one thing about yourself would you change?

XI) If you could spend one day with any person who has ever lived, who would you spend it with?

XII) If you had to spend the rest of your life in isolation with *only* one other person-- any person who has ever lived-- who would you spend it with?

XIII) If you could travel through time and space to any place in the world, at any point in history, and spend only 24 hours there, where & when would you visit?

XIV) If you could travel through time and space to any place in the world, at any point in history-- but you suspected it might be a one-way trip-- where & when would you visit, at the risk of being stranded there for the rest of your life?

XV) If you were forced to choose between *severely* beating (but not killing) one of your close friends, or beating a random stranger to death, or being beaten to death yourself, which would you choose?

XVI) If you were forced to drop an atomic bomb on any city/town/village/hamlet on Earth, what community would you erase from the map?

XVII) If an all-out nuclear war broke out and atomic weapons were on their way toward every city worldwide with a population over 10,000 people, and you had the power to divert any one weapon from its target, what one community would you spare from annihilation?

XVIII) If you had to choose between spending the rest of your life confined to your home (but others could come and go as they pleased), or stepping out your front door *in five minutes* and *never* being able to go back home again, which would you choose?

XIX) If you had to give up either clothing or electricity for the rest of your life, would you rather spend the rest of your life naked or unplugged?

XX) If you had to lose either the ability to laugh, or the ability to cry, which would you choose never to do again?

XXI) If you had to choose between dying in one year, or living for one million years (scaled, so you physically aged at a rate commensurate with a million-year lifespan), would you want the shorter or the longer life?

XXII) If you had to choose between being physically attractive to everyone, but approximately half as intelligent as you are now, or being physically unattractive to everyone but twice as intelligent as you are now, which would you choose?

XXIII) If you were personally threatened with harm by unknown malefactors, but you could be assured a life of safety at the cost of some of your freedoms-- namely privacy and freedom of assembly-- would you rather be safe and less free, or keep your freedoms and perhaps come to harm?

XXIV) If you were about to be tortured and your captors offered you a choice between physical torture (24 continuous hours of the worst pain you could ever imagine) or psychological torture (24 continuous hours of humi

Being beatin by a close friend

Here now, that wasn't one of the options listed icon_confused.gif Unless you mean 'beaten to death,' which it wasn't stipulated would be by a friend in particular. I'm just nitpicking here to make sure no one misinterprets there being an option to just get beaten up (but not fatally) yourself. It's A) viciously injure a friend, B) kill a stranger, or C) getting killed yourself.

If you're choosing self-sacrifice, though, then nevermind... carry on.

most of the questions are fucked up, sorry.

however, I will answer this one:

XXII) If you had to choose between being physically attractive to everyone, but approximately half as intelligent as you are now, or being physically unattractive to everyone but twice as intelligent as you are now, which would you choose?

I´d be half as intelligent. I´ve often thought my life would be simpler were I less clever. icon_rolleyes.gif and hey, with the 80 or 90 IQ points that were left I could still be a republican senator.

    1) Good question... Give up the smell of tea, or the taste of dinner? Probably taste, since losing smell would fuck it up anyway.

    2) Sight, or hearing? Do you choose to lose music, or art? I might go crazy without music, but my hobbies are mostly visual, but could I even do those without touch? Sight I guess.

    3) ::shrugs:: I like food. Something dinner-y. With a meat and a salad.

    4) I know of no hour that wouldn't become boring after infinity.

    5) In my sleep, of old age, shortly after my partner passed.

    6) Drowning. Dehydration is slow and very painful.

    7) Depends. If my loved ones have already passed, then alone. Otherwise, in pain with them there. I have a high pain threshold.

icon_cool.gif Respected but not liked by the larger group of peers, since that implies my close friends would still like me.

    9) Hard question. Do we know it will be listened to? If not, I'd probably send it back to myself as a kid and tell me to pick gymnastics over soccer. If so, then I'd send it back to prevent something like the Trail of Tears.

    10) I'd change the single gene that gives me kidney stones.

    11) Is it cheating to say Alexander the Great, then at the end of the day, I'd kill him to prevent his destruction of knowledge and culture?

    12) Plenty of people I could imagine. The partner I haven't met. Newton. Sagan. Da Vinci. Einstein...

    13) Ancient Egypt or China to learn what I could of their science.

    14) Good question. Somewhere I wouldn't be killed or enslaved, and could use my knowledge to drastically increase the rate of scientific progress.

    15) Don't think I can say for sure. If I'm totally honest with myself, I can't say I wouldn't pick to kill someone.

    16) The Vatican (hey it's legally it's own state/city).

    17) I'd throw a dart. There's reasons to save just about every major city.

1icon_cool.gif I'd walk out the door. Easy.

    19) Electricity. I don't really do warm places, and you can't live in cold ones without clothes. But I can deal without electricity, just gimme a fireplace.

    20) Cry. I rarely cry anyway. And laughter is one of the most therapeutic things in the world.

    21) Million years. The knowledge I could accumulate!

    22) Intelligent. We all age anyway.

    23) Freedom and likely harm

    24) Physical pain. I've dealt with both, and physical pain is less likely to fracture my psyche.

brandohsaurus said...Some of those questions just ain't right,

Hey, what are you really gonna learn-- about yourself or about anyone else-- if the questions aren't at least a little challenging? I'm realising, though, that I should have defined a few of the questions better. Specifically:

IV) If you knew you were about to enter an hour-long repeating loop of time over and over for the rest of time, how would you spend that infinitely repeating hour?
This isn't "what would your fantasy hour be?" I meant realistically, if you found out right now that in, say, one hour you were going to enter a cyclical loop of time forever, what would you do? You've got a bit of time to arrange things, but it's got to be something you could actually find yourself doing (ie. no threesomes with hot celebrities unless you actually know them and could set up a romp on pretty short notice icon_wink.gif )

IX) If you could send a brief (1 or 2 sentences) message back in time: who would you send it to, and at what time, and what would it say?
Assume that the message will be received and believed by the recipient.

XV) If you were forced to choose between *severely* beating (but not killing) one of your close friends, or beating a random stranger to death, or being beaten to death yourself, which would you choose?
People keep calling this one stupid or picking "none of the above." It's limited-multiple-choice, I like out-of-the-box thinking but in this case you don't get a "none of the above." You're being forced to pick one of the three. And it isn't a "stupid" question, it's meant to find out if you were faced with several terrible options which you would choose. It reveals a bit about what your priorities are and what you can live with.

XXIII) If you were personally threatened with harm by unknown malefactors, but you could be assured a life of safety at the cost of some of your freedoms-- namely privacy and freedom of assembly-- would you rather be safe and less free, or keep your freedoms and perhaps come to harm?
This isn't a "stupid question" either, it's very relevant to the much-talked-about "post-9/11, post-Patriot-Act" society that the population of one of the world's trend-setting nations lives in. This is a choice people are being called upon to actually make and that you might have to choose and stand up for. It should be taken seriously.

Also, the 2nd-to-last and last questions got cut off when I was copy/pasting them so here they are, maybe some of you will catch them in this follow up:

XXIV) If you were about to be tortured and your captors offered you a choice between physical torture (24 continuous hours of the worst pain you could ever imagine) or psychological torture (24 continuous hours of humiliation and being confronted by your worst fears) would you choose to test the limits of your body, or your mind?

XXV) If you had to choose between spending the rest of your life: angry, but never afraid; afraid, but never lonely; lonely, but never bored; or bored, but never angry, which would you choose?

Lostboy saidmost of the questions are fucked up, sorry.

however, I will answer this one:

XXII) If you had to choose between being physically attractive to everyone, but approximately half as intelligent as you are now, or being physically unattractive to everyone but twice as intelligent as you are now, which would you choose?

I´d be half as intelligent. I´ve often thought my life would be simpler were I less clever. icon_rolleyes.gif and hey, with the 80 or 90 IQ points that were left I could still be a republican senator.

I'd rather be less intelligent and beautiful because i probably wouldn't understand how stupid was and i'd be okay. Ignorance is bliss right?

but being ugly, and intelligent, i would know how ugly i was. and even then, ambition is far more useful then raw intelligence.

And then we could both live and I'd spend the rest of my life repaying him for not making me kill myself. Because... number two is out of the question... so its between option 1 and 3

XVI) If you were forced to drop an atomic bomb on any city/town/village/hamlet on Earth, what community would you erase from the map? The Sahara Desert? Wouldnt kill many people, animals etc, hopefully.

XXII) If you had to choose between being physically attractive to everyone, but approximately half as intelligent as you are now, or being physically unattractive to everyone but twice as intelligent as you are now, which would you choose? intelligence = moneymaking power = plastic surgery, personal trainers, stylists and nutritionists

K', to be fair here are my answers to my own questions:

    I) Which one sense would choose I give up?
Smell. I can think of lots of smells I wouldn't miss.

II) Which one sense would I choose to preserve?
Touch. Deaf and blind, at least I could still feel someone touching me and could try to figure out a way to communicate physically.

III) If I could only eat one meal for the rest of my life, what would it be?
Caesar salad, grilled chicken breast, mashed potatoes w/ garlic, steamed vegetables, apple pie, strawberries, whipped cream, tea and a bit of chocolate. Note I didn't stipulate you have to eat all of your chosen meal at every sitting ;)

IV) If I were about to enter an hour-long repeating loop for the rest of time, how would I spend that infinitely repeating hour?
Have a bunch of my best friends over to hang out for half an hour, and spend the other half-hour in bed with my bf... and if the bf ok'd it, any of the aforementioned (hot) friends who wanted to spend eternity getting freaky.

    V) How would I choose to die?
Quickly, in a hail of bullets, but doing some heroic shit like covering the retreat of friends in battle or the evacuation of innocent refugees or something. Might as well go out for a good cause.

VI) Drown or die of thirst?
Thirst. I've heard that drowning is terrifying and painful, and that death of dehydration is preceded by wacky hallucinations.

VII) Die in pain, or die alone?
Alone, like most animals choose to. I'm not afraid of being alone, but in pain surrounded by others might be undignified.

VIII) Being liked but not respected by friends, or respected but not liked by everybody?
Respected. Anybody can be 'liked' if they pander enough. If everybody likes you, you've probably never said or done anything meaningful.

IX) What brief (1 or 2 sentences) message would I send back in time?
Maybe the hardest question for me... But I'm thinking: first tribe of homo sapiens, Eastern Africa, about 200,000 years ago; message reads: "Stay home, or if you must spread out, move slowly and stay connected. Respect and be good to one another, accepting that not everyone is the same and that that's okay." It would probably undo most of human history-- the migrations, the diversification, the subsequent racial conflicts and wars, the descimation of the environment world-wide-- but I think we could have done a fair bit better, anyway.
Alternate answer: myself, at the age of 5 or 6; message reads: "LEARN as much as you can by feeding your mind LOTS of books-- especially philosophy books. Take up exercise as early as possible, and eat right."
Another alternate answer: Jesus of Nazarth (if he was really real), about 31 or 32 AD; message reads: "Please write your own autobiography/memoirs in clear, simple language. If you let others do it for you, your message is going to be warped to serve all kinds of evil ends throughout history."

    X) What one alteration to my own DNA would I make?
I'd give myself that mutation that that kid has where your body doesn't store fat and your muscles grow bigger and stronger than normal. A week ago I'd have said "fix my nearsighted eyes" but I got laser surgery on Friday and if I could have done that sooner, why waste the intervention?

XI) What one person would I spend a day with?
Alexander the Great. We could talk about philosophy, about his military campaigns, about guys... and if he looked anything like Colin Farrell did in the movie, hopefully we could get nekkid and wrestle icon_smile.gif

XII) What one person would I spend the rest of my life in isolation with?
Siddhārtha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. Because I think he could have taught me plenty about internal peace, and when we weren't discussing philosophy I figure he would have been an easy person to spend time with in silence.

XIII) If I could spend 24 hours in any time and place in world history, where & when would I visit?
The Stonewall Inn, New York City, 1 AM, June 28, 1969. I wanna watch some drag queens riot.

XIV) Where/when would I go if I could go to any time and place in the world's history at the risk of being stranded there for the rest of my life?
Thebes, Greece, 342 BC. I'd enlist in their military for a few years, shoot myself in the foot and get a medical discharge before the battle at Chaeronea in 338 BC, then putter my way around Greece-- visit the Spartan burial site at Thermopylae, maybe see if I could cross paths with Alexander the Great-- and ultimately retire to Athens and hopefully still be around in 301 BC to see the emergence of the school of Stoicism

XV) If forced to choose between *severely* beating (but not killing) a close friend, beating a random stranger to death, or being beaten to death myself?
I'd beat one of my friends senseless. I think they would understand if it was the only option that didn't end with a death. A friend who's still alive might eventually forgive you; a dead stranger can't, and choosing to die when no one *has to* is just stupid.

XVI) If you were forced to drop an atomic bomb what community would I wipe off the map?
Jerusalem (not "Israel," Jerusalem). Because I know of no piece of real estate on the planet over which more innocent blood's been spilled. So flatten it. Maybe then the billions of people worldwide who think it's *so* important will be shocked into the realisation that where you live is less important than *how* you live.

XVII) In an all-out nuclear war, what one community would I spare from annihilation?
Toronto, Ontario. Even though I live in not-Toronto. I think civilisation could recover well enough based out of TO.

XVIII) Spend the rest of my life confined to my home or step out the front door *in five minutes* *never* to return?
I'd leave. 5 minutes is enough time to pack a couple changes of clothes, some books, and my laptop. And those same people who are free to come and go could see me in other places. Better to be a prisoner in the world than a prisoner in the same 4 walls ad nauseum.

XIX) Give up either clothing or electricity for the rest of my life?
Clothing I could do without as long as I had electricity. I don't think the inverse is true.

XX) Lose either the ability to laugh, or the ability to cry?
Laughter. Because besides being a valuable outlet for 'bad' feelings, many of the *best* emotions I've ever felt-- when felt strongly enough-- have brought me to tears. I could do without laughing, especially the inappropriate laughing (to which I'm occasionally prone).

XXI) Die in one year, or living for one million years (but aging slowly)?
The opportunity to see where things go (and to maybe have a hand in them) would be amazing. Plus, $100 in the bank with a million years of compound interest, at the end of my very long life I wouldn't have to worry about money. And I'd finally have time to *learn,* maybe even enough to learn everything I ever wanted to know. And the "you'll outlive everyone you know" thing doesn't really scare me.

XXII) Be physically attractive to everyone, but ~1/2 as intelligent as now, or being unattractive to everyone but twice as intelligent as now?
A 50% hit to my brain-power would probably have a less adverse effect on my quality of life than universal hotness would have a positive effect; I think I'd still be smart enough to exploit the new looks.

XXIII) Be safe and less free, or keep my freedoms and perhaps come to harm?
I'm skeptical of *any* outside "assurances" of my safety, even if they were free of charge. Plus I think if I freely assembled the right group of people I could keep myself safer than "Big Brother" could. I'd choose my freedoms.

XXIV) 24 continuous hours of physical or psychological torture?
Push my mental buttons, I'm curious to see what's on the other side of my psych threshold.

XXV) Spending the rest of my life angry but never afraid; afraid but never lonely; lonely but never bored; or bored but never angry?
Angry. I mean I'm *already* angry, so what's the big deal if I lose my faculty for fear? Lord knows it would probably facilitate my answer to #V.

    I) If you had to give up one of your physical senses to preserve the others, which would choose you give up?

I would give up my sense of taste to preserve my other senses.

II) If you had to lose all *but* one of your physical senses, which one would you choose to keep?

I would keep my sense of sight.

III) If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?(That's not necessarily one 'food,' it's one 'meal'-- for instance: an omelette, toast, coffee & OJ, or a steak, fries, salad & beer-- replacing every meal every day.)

Fillet cooked rare with a sweet potato and a glass of very good wine or scotch.

IV) If you knew you were about to enter an hour-long repeating loop of time over and over for the rest of time, how would you spend that infinitely repeating hour?

I would be sitting at an organ with every piece of baroque sheet music ever written.

    V) If you could choose the manner of your own death, how would you choose to die?

    Heart Attack

VI) If you had to choose between drowning or dying of thirst which would you choose?

I would chose dying of thirst. I hate being in water as much as a cat.

VII) If you had to choose between dying in pain, or dying alone, which would you choose?

I would rather die in pain than die alone.

VIII) If you had to choose between being liked-- but not respected-- by your friends, or respected-- but not liked-- by the larger community of your peers, which would you choose?

I would chose being respected but not liked by the larger community. I perish the thought of not being respected by my closest friends.

IX) If you could send a brief (1 or 2 sentences) message back in time: who would you send it to, and at what time, and what would it say?

April 13, 1865. Mr. Lincoln, Do not go to the theatre tomorrow.

    X) If you could go back in time with the technology to make any one alteration to your own DNA in-utero, what one thing about yourself would you change?

    Wouldn't change a thing.

XI) If you could spend one day with any person who has ever lived, who would you spend it with?

    Frédéric Chopin

XII) If you had to spend the rest of your life in isolation with *only* one other person-- any person who has ever lived-- who would you spend it with?

    Frédéric Chopin

XIII) If you could travel through time and space to any place in the world, at any point in history, and spend only 24 hours there, where & when would you visit?

November 22, 1963 on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository. I'd have knocked Oswald out cold from behind. My, how different the world might be.

XIV) If you could travel through time and space to any place in the world, at any point in history-- but you suspected it might be a one-way trip-- where & when would you visit, at the risk of being stranded there for the rest of your life?

I would go back and become a pupil of Franz Liszt.

XV) If you were forced to choose between *severely* beating (but not killing) one of your close friends, or beating a random stranger to death, or being beaten to death yourself, which would you choose?

This is difficult. I guess I'd be beaten to death.

XVI) If you were forced to drop an atomic bomb on any city/town/village/hamlet on Earth, what community would you erase from the map?

The one that would cause the least amount of suffering/damage.

XVII) If an all-out nuclear war broke out and atomic weapons were on their way toward every city worldwide with a population over 10,000 people, and you had the power to divert any one weapon from its target, what one community would you spare from annihilation?

I would chose to divert the one that would cause the most amount of suffering/damage.

XVIII) If you had to choose between spending the rest of your life confined to your home (but others could come and go as they pleased), or stepping out your front door *in five minutes* and *never* being able to go back home again, which would you choose?

I would rather step out my front door knowing I'd never be able to return than becoming a prisoner of my home. There's too much to see out there!

XIX) If you had to give up either clothing or electricity for the rest of your life, would you rather spend the rest of your life naked or unplugged?

I would give up electricity before clothing.

XX) If you had to lose either the ability to laugh, or the ability to cry, which would you choose never to do again?

I would choose to lose the ability to laugh. Crying is such a powerful emotion. It sounds weird, I know.

XXI) If you had to choose between dying in one year, or living for one million years (scaled, so you physically aged at a rate commensurate with a million-year lifespan), would you want the shorter or the longer life?

Well, I would rather look like Yoda and learn as much as I can than leave a nice corpse.

XXII) If you had to choose between being physically attractive to everyone, but approximately half as intelligent as you are now, or being physically unattractive to everyone but twice as intelligent as you are now, which would you choose?

I would chose to be twice as intelligent and half as attractive.

XXIII) If you were personally threatened with harm by unknown malefactors, but you could be assured a life of safety at the cost of some of your freedoms-- namely privacy and freedom of assembly-- would you rather be safe and less free, or keep your freedoms and perhaps come to harm?

I'd much rather be free and less safe. Besides, I know how to defend myself, and I don't believe that freedom and safety are mutually exclusive.

XXIV) If you were about to be tortured and your captors offered you a choice between physical torture (24 continuous hours of the worst pain you could ever imagine) or psychological torture?

I would chose psychological torture. My psyche is powerful, my body is not. That said, I do have an extremely high pain threshold.
