Noticed a post here and heard it on the news, Top cities with the ugliest men. Now, it seems right away that we gotta know, gotta know. Is my city listed? I bet I can guess what city...etc.

But do you really think that is important news? No, it's not. However, if you click on the link, or watch the story on TV, it sends a signal to the media that you ARE. And then they come up with more dumb stuff.

The only way to make crap like that stop is to stop showing any interest in it at all. If people did that for a month, even a week, we could control the media.

The problem is that most people are dumb, or bored, or easily amused.
Just look at all the crap that's on television.
    It gets dumber every season.
And, enough dumb people must be watching it to make it worthwhile for the producers to put it on the air.

Ha ha, I don't even WATCH the "news" anymore, let alone even knowing about that story you're referring to.

It's a good idea but you forget, the vast majority of people are unthinking, follower types. They'll keep on watching what they think is cool to watch and networks will keep right on cranking out the same garbage. icon_confused.gif

I just think it's funny how we asume that "others" are dumb for X or Y reason. Set A thinks some set B is just dumb because they have X reaction, even though in most cases set B is subjective/imaginary .

There's a huge problem with general stupidity, the problem is that we asume our interests are the smartest choices. If someone likes to hear about the top 10 cities with the ugliest people then why shouldn't he? It's called curiosity, and a certain interest on random data. I think the media is pretty diverse as it's supposed to be. No one is dumb, and if someone has to be then we all are.

Have u ever noticed how everyone says American are stupid? Have u ever noticed how pretty much all Americans agree with that statement? So if everyone agrees and everyone thinks Americans are stupid but still they give for granted they are not part of the "stupid set" then the question is : who is?

i used to say that americans are stupid... and then i traveled to other countries and realized that they are just as stupid as we are. that probably does more to prove your point than anything, but yeah, we don't have a monopoly on stupidity.

I grew up watching re-runs of Lost in Space, The Brady Bunch, Gilligan's Island, Green Acres, Hogan's Heroes and Speed Racer every day. That's as stupid as it comes. And yet I still ended up with an engineering degree somehow, so the damage isn't permanent.

I don't know if we are programmed to look at dumb shit, or just constantly needing to be entertained. Six of one, half a dozen of the other, maybe.

In any population the average person is going to be average.

That means that in any population only a minority will have above-average abilities and tastes (however you define them).

Thus we find that only a minority are busy pursuing smart interests while the rest of us are here on this site reading guy-above-you threads.

As I always say, Marcia Brady taught me everything I need to know about life and how to build a suspension bridge. Green Acres, however, I found to be a gripping morality play about how blind love can lead one to live in a hovel with Oliver Douglas and a talking pig. It is a little known fact that Tennessee Williams actually wrote the pilot for Green Acres. Gilligan's Island teaches us about the dangers of cheap package tours and sudden climate change. Speed Racer, well, I don't know the moral of that one, but I can think of a couple of immoral things I'd like to do with Speed Racer.

Hey gyz, hate to the "philosopher/conspiracist" but you know that the "dumb shit" is the point, right?
That the media is kept in place by (whatever) guvt. in order to pablumize the masses. IOW, YES! We are programmed to watch dumb shit...and it was the guvt. who did the programming. !

    although it's a harsh generalization, I don't disagree much.
people will even watch stupid shows they're not really interested in (I know a few), in order to be able to talk to co workers, and not be left out etc. cos stupid reality tv is generally what is the conversation topic in workplaces.

target the lowest common denominator... it works

Apparently, you haven't seen the documentary to make a generalization about it.

Also, let me point blank finally tell you. You are not liked here by most people. You have a problem, maybe it's how you were brought up, maybe it's the steroids you put in your blood. But you are all around a very not nice to be around guy.

So keep being a dick to people. It will get you right where you are now. Nowhere, with nobody.

Sorry but what exactly makes everyone average? Average on what? in taste? You could use the average term on fields like mathematics, physics, computer science, biology, literature, arts etc. Someone might have an average knowledge about x topic, that will be perfectly true still we ALL are average on so many things and we will be over the average only on a few things. However the term doesnt apply to "taste" or interests, you cant be called average because you like red instead of blue, you cant be called average because you find insects more interesting than architecture.

Finally, just because you find a certain piece of information interesting does not mean in any way that you will preffer this information over others, it just means you find it interesting, entertaining, refreshing or whatever works for the individual in question. If I want to create or reply to the guy above you threads this doesnt mean I havent contributted to the forum in any other way, this only means I find them entertaining and at the same time I still will continue posting on other threads I personally prefer over the guy above you threads. So, does that make me average to you? YOu seem to think so, but that's only your opinion and your opinion is totally subjective, hence it only works in your own brain and with your own set of rules(based on your personal preferences) which are also subjective. You, are average, and youre not better than anyone else because you happened to like something else, you should get your intrapersonal intelligence skills a little bit over the average.

Really, Speed Racer? I was all about Racer X (who was secretly his older brother). Even before I knew I was gay or what gay even was, that Racer X cartoon character used to give me hard-ons.

Oh, and to that old question straight guys always ask, "Ginger or Mary Ann?", my answer would have honestly always been, "Neither, Mrs. Howell." That should have been a flashing red light right there that I was gonna turn out gay.

    LOL. Yes, I do that.

You know what: looking for a photo of Natalie Schafer (who played Lovey Howell), I stumbled across an article online titled "A Scholarly Critique of the Style, Symbolism and Sociopolitical Relevance of Gilligan's Island". So maybe all that stuff wasn't as stupid as it seemed at the time.icon_eek.gif

I watch a bunch of reality shows. There, I said it. But I'm also a professional in a responsible job. I have a Masters degree as well. These are indicators (though surprisingly not always accurate ones) that I am in all likelihood not unintelligent. (There could be another discussion on the differences between stupidity, ignorance and mental handicap but that's another thread).

I sometimes feel guilty that I am wasting my time but I guess if I didn't derive some pleasure from watching I wouldn't do it - and I happen to swerve more towards hedonist philosophy that the typical North American maxim to work yourself to death and be rewarded later in a (non-existent) heaven.

So I would quibble with the statement that watchers of non-intellectual reality shows and similar programming are neccesarily 'stupid'. In other words I doubt there is an empirical link between the two.

The motivation for watching low-brow television programs can have many antecedents. For example one person may identify with a guest on the Jerry Springer show (which I personally find offensive) and another may watch due to fascination with a subsection of culture which he or she would not otherwise encounter.

There is also a voyeuristic urge in many of us - the desire to see behind the taboo curtain, to find out if they are 'just like me' or deliciously different. And these shows have all perfected the art of the teaser - and that includes News programs which have by now mostly devolved into edutainment.

By feeling superior to the guests/litigants/tribemates etc. we can also give the old self-esteem a boost. "Oh, I would never be that idiotic!"

And then there is the thirst for drama and conflict which can be quenched vicariously by sitting at home on our couches while watching somebody else do the hair-pulling.

I have my own reasons for watching or not watching a program and I'd argue that the reasons for doing so differ markedly among many individuals.

However, taking into account that many of us share the above motivations - curiosity/voyeurism; the need to feel better than; addiction to conflict; and a desire to be wrenched out of boredom - then yes, we are in some ways 'programmed to watch dumb shit'. Does resisting this urge make us more intelligent or morally and culturally superior to our cohorts? I think not.
