Why has global warming become climate change?

Has anyone noticed how politicians no longer refer to it as global warming, now it's climate change. Why? Do they know something we don't?

Because folks interpret global warming to mean everything must be getting hotter and hotter if the atmosphere and oceans retain more heat instead of realizing that in a complex system it might be mean erratic or uncustomary temperature changes and/or weather patterns. So for example if the oceans are getting warmer but a cold winter happens, people might think that the oceans are not warming up and discount it because how can you have a cold winter if the globe is warming up?

It's like referring to sexual orientation as a sexual preference. Preference implies that a person is attracted to both sexes and that involvement with one over the other is a choice which obviously isn't the case.

Maybe it's because it hasn't been exponentially warming since 1998, and we've been on a cooling trend, so it would be inaccurate to call it "global warming".

Although sunspot cycles recently started up again, so we may be heading into a warming trend again, which sounds better to me than a cooling one. Also, this tends to point to the Sun as having a much more significant effect on climate change than people, which makes a lot of sense, and tends to be left out of any discussion of climate change, so that you are either put in the camps of those who think the world is coming to an end due to human behaviour... or you are a "denier" (which usually implies that one does not think climate change "exists" or "is happening"... also, an absurd claim).

However, what about those that acknowledge its existence, yet challenge the scientific assumptions of its causes and effects? There is still debate within the scientific community, it is within the political and economic spheres that a "consensus" has been reached.

Personally, i think climatic change has more to do with the sun - solar radiation, sun spots, etc- than human activity.

It would also help explain why, at the same time Earth was getting warmer, many other planets in our solar system were also heating up, at the same time as sunspot activity was increasing. Many of our solar system's planets warming at the same time can't be explained away by SUVs.

ITS ALL POLITICS, AND PEOPLE ARE WAKING UP. GLOBAL WARMING IS A TOTAL SCAM AND IS A WAY FOR THE POLITICIANS TO MAKE MORE MONEY.
GAYS ARE USUALLY THE LAST TO WAKE UP BECAUSE MOST DO NOT USE MUCH OF THEIR BRAIN. IT IS COATED WITH PERFUME AND DRUGS AND ALCOHOL TO BE ABLE TO THINK NORMALLY.

Because climate change is a more understandable term. As the planet warms, some parts of it actually get colder, and lots of people live in those places...

Kind of like how the "public option" in healthcare is now being referred to by the Speaker as the "competitive option."

In all due respect sir, you should kindly stop pushing everything on the republicans that isnt working for you.
Public option is not wanted by a MAJORITY of the american people, and they play the public as a bunch of idiots, so they can change the name so the public might not notice.
Yea, they changed global warming to climate change to thwart republicans.. Am I hearing this correct?? You think they are calling it that bc of republicans???
QUESTION- Did you do much acid in the 60's?

I haven't heard of it being a scam, just debate about what it's actually causing it and whether it's something that people should be concerned about or not.

That's a misleading statistic. If you examine the decade from 1997 or 1999, it actually is heating up. There was just an article the other where an independent group of statisticians showed the earth is in fact heating up and that you can only prove it's cooling down by selectively pick dates to answer (also, this year is heading to be the 6th hottest year since records were kept)

    Ditto.

It's not like the glaciers receded due to SUVs or human activity, either.

Uh, how the hell does "global warming" make money for politicians? That's an asinine comment unless you can substantiate it. It seems like most of the politicians (and that's most of them in general) who resist taking serious and immediate action on climate change cite the billions and trillions of dollars it's going to cost, while it's only a minority that talk about economic opportunities incumbent to trying to solve the problem.

And that's climate change, because we've established that in a system as complex as Earth's biosphere a large-scale change isn't going to appear as simplistic as just "warming."

Ladies and Gentleman.... this comment made by imperator is that of a blithering idiot who has no clue how the classic poliitician mind works. This is a gold mine in the eyes of the politicians... a whole new pseudoscience that can make up hundreds of new ways to tax. And how did you come up with the trillions of dollars figure as a monetary amount it would take to fix it??
Just unbelievable the down right stupidity the website spews out

Public option is not wanted by a MAJORITY of the american people[...]

"With all 'due' respect," that's a god damned lie.

Opinion poll after poll after poll are reporting that a majority of the U.S. population favours the existence of a public option (even if they don't need to enroll in it themselves) because a majority of them are at least moral enough that they don't believe their fellow citizens should fucking die on account of they can't afford to be gouged by private HMOs that care only about enriching their shareholders and nothing about providing the services their plan-holders pay for and depend on. When you let a corporation whose sole motive is profit take money from people in exchange for the promise that they'll get it back when they need it, but you let said corporation attach strings like "we can keep the money and give you nothing if we find out you stubbed your toe when you were 11," or "we can keep the million dollars you've paid us over 40 years but limit what we'll pay back out to $100k," you're letting that corporation make a handful of greedy motherfuckers rich off of abusive hair-splitting, theft, and human suffering. And somehow they and their proxies-- the politicians and pundits they've payed off to represent them to the masses-- have conned you into thinking that that's okay, maybe because they've sold you on the perverse notion that by sinking to the depths of their depravity you too can aspire to their heights of their riches.

Whatever the reason is for your cloying support for them, you're entitled to throw your lot in wherever you like. But when it comes to the methods of advancing their interests... you are lying, you're saying the exact opposite of the measurable objective facts in hopes of deceiving others into accepting a falsehood. And that shouldn''t be tolerated.

Isn't it so that the blame is taken off of us and put on...nature?

The verb change is to just ease our guilt. And acquiesce to all the crazies who don't believe we have a hand in the matter in the first place.

People often assume that with the name "global warming" everything should be getting hotter all the time everywhere, which is not what is actually happening. "Climate change" more accurately reflects the effects of global warming, which include everything from colder winters to dryer summers to melting ice caps.... it's a proven fact that this is not happening due to the earth's "natural cycles" but to the way humans have radically changed and continue to change the earth's atmosphere.

It utterly amazes me that something that is proven scientific knowledge is still questioned by so many people who have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Your opinions on climate change and its causes are irrelevant to the fact that scientific research PROVES it's real, it's dangerous, and it's being caused by human activity.

Whoa whoa whoa.... How in the world can you say that humans are the cause of what cannot even be called "global warming" but now is "climate change"??? It is NOT a proven science, and that is where the LIE starts to come in.
Never once has global warming been proven and even is so that it is not natural? Your comments that you stated are all broad generalizations with zero evidence to back it up.
Sure post some politicized web site blog that proves your point... I think the American people can tell the difference between phony global warming and what really is.
First your people claim the earth is heating up.. now its not??
Now you call it climate change and why is that? Sorry global warming hocus pocus doesnt jive with me or the the world anymore.

Again, you can state your beliefs as many times as you want. That doesn't counter the actual scientific evidence which proves that climate change is occurring and caused by humans. I have posted many links to this effect. You choose not to see and to accept your own irrational opinions over logic and solid science.

Live in ignorance, if you insist. Just please don't vote so you stop endangering the rest of us.
