Caffeine used in moderation has many beneficial effects. Caffeine is no longer believed to cause cancer or birth defects.

    Caffeine causes a stress response

Caffeine can improve exercise tolerance. I always have a cup of coffee before going to the gym

Caffeine blocks the adenosine receptor in the brain. Adenosine is sedating and blocking it's receptor will allow the cell to be fully alert.

Blood sugar will rise as a result of the stress response. This theoretically may not be good if you are diabetic.

Cortisol is released during the stress reaction. Excess cortisol is catabolic and has the potential to cause muscle breakdown and abdominal obesity (Cushing's Disease/Syndrome). I doubt if this is a real problem. I know many muscular and lean guys that abuse caffeine energy drinks

Excess caffeine can be habit forming and withdrawal can occur. Headaches is one of the big problems people have when they stop caffeine.

If you have hypertension or certain heart problems, the blood pressure elevation and increase in heart rate may be detrimental

I swear by it. I start the day with at least 4-5 cups of coffee, and between 1.5-2 gallons of diet sodas in the summers. I don't drink near as much diet soda in the cooler seasons though.

i'd prolly recomend not drinking diet sodas.... especially that much

might wanna do some research on how artificial sweetners "negatively" affect you...

i'd rather see you drink the sugary verisions...

A friend of mine can't touch aspartame. If she does, she ends up with ulcers. I have no issues with it, although I prefer diet sodas made with Splenda over other fake sweeteners.

I can't drink real sodas. I get horrible sugar crashes if I do, which is why I originally switched to diet sodas years ago.

caffeine is also supposed to improve memory.

i often have an espresso an hour before going to gym , or biking/running.

and during bike races, if it was a long course, many guys , incl. me would keep a bottle of flat coke on the bike or handed out at the feed zone. for the last 30 to 40 minutes of a race, it gave that little extra boost : mixture of sugar and caffeine.
