Foreign Service Update!
Oct 29, 2009 12:28 AM GMT
As many of you know, I decided to apply to the Foreign Service this year. I took the exam in October and just received the news that....

I passed!

Now the next step is to write a series of biographical essays outlining what a cool, confident, multi-cultural, swell guy I am. In other words, fiction. LOL.

It's the first hurdle over with. Wish me luck.

That's just great! The farther you are away from me and the USA, the happier I will be.

Well this could be interesting...would we eventually get a story from you like this?

...or would it be too private, keeping this guy a secret fling (bad for the 'get offa my lawn' reputation if it gets out, lol).

Not really. It's not volunteer work.
The United States is represented in every country where we have diplomatic ties by embassies. Embassies are staffed by members of the U.S. government (State Department) and the collection of all the people who staff them are known as the Foreign Service.

They have very diverse duties, including issuing visas for foreigners who wish to come here to visit or to live, helping Americans who run into trouble in their host countries, analyzing the local economies or political situations of the host country and sending reports on conditions back to Washington, and other duties. There are five different career tracks to choose from: I chose the 'consular' track, which means issuing visas, helping Americans who run afoul of local laws, that kind of thing.

I've heard that the real tough part of the foreign service hiring process is the interview. Supposedly they look for a very specific type of personality. Since they get so many applicants a year, they tend to have their pick when it comes to whom they'd want to work with.

I gear its really interesting once you do make it though. Good luck!

Didn't Hemingway write from abroad? This would be an excellent fit for you, Jeff.

Hemingway wrote from a-top four broads. Last wife was Mary.

Also, your duties involve buying drinks for Peace Corps volunteers (if you're in a PC country) and letting us stay in your sweet pad in the capital to do laundry and feel like we're not living in the middle of nowhere for a night.

Ahem.
