Are you ready to update to "Windows 7"?
Oct 29, 2009 12:11 PM GMT

It must be great to be Microsoft. You release a really crap operating system like Windows Vista, and within the blink of an eye, you're releasing its replacement Windows 7 and getting everyone to buy that too.

Then the likes of the BBC give you loads of free advertising to tell everyone all about it. And then everyone goes out and buys yet another version of Windows.

What a cash cow!

But we must have the new version of Windows. We must!! We must!!!

Actually no we don't. We don't even need the old version of Windows "Vista",lol

So if you were about to change your operating system anyhow because you're salivating over the new Windows, install Ubuntu instead.
If you find that you hate it then you can always go out and buy Windows 7 anyhow.
But I bet you won't!, and don't forget, whether you're changing to Windows 7 or to Ubuntu, back up your important files and documents before you do!

Ive been hearing a lot about this new OS, not 7, Im sorry but I miss XP... more over I miss windows 2000. that was by far the best. I want to buy a mac but damn.. they are expensive. Also Im not so sure I like the idea of having a built-in battery. I know from my laptops (hp) I can go through a battery within a year. What are you supposed to do when that one dies? Mac-mini seems like the best answer. I wanted to get a cube but I hear about the heat issues and with them cracking. Not sure Im ready to jump on the bandwagon just yet.

I laugh at the Windows 7 marketing....

"Look at all the stuff I can run on my PC at the same time now without worrying it will freeze up!"

Hahahahahahahahahahha. I have been doing that ON my MAC since about 1991 when system 7 came out.

Of course, even if you change to Windows 7, you still have to hunt for new drivers for your printer and all that crap.

I'm running Windows 7 now. No problems.

I'm no Windows zealot, but most of the "Mac only" people I know have never been able to show me a compelling reason to switch to Macs.

I've worked in graphics and media for decades. In environments that used Mac only, they constantly talked about how much better/easier Mac's were. Virtually every designer's Mac crashed about once a day with regular reminders that you needed to save your work all the time. This was normal for them and they didn't see it as an issue because Macs were 'better'. If I asked how to do something on a Mac that I could do on a Windows system, sometimes the answer would actually be "You can't, but why would you need to?" as if the long way around the barn was inexplicably 'better.'

I even would hear of new features on an upgrade to the Mac OS over the years as something that made the Mac OS even better. When I would point out that it was a feature on Windows OS for years, it would be dismissed (e.g. multi button mice, right-click context menus, resizing windows from any edge, etc.)

I still use both at work, but at home, it's Windows. I will point out that I've always used NT and the higher end versions of Windows as opposed to the 'home' versions.

I'm definitely not anti-Mac, but I've not seen any truly compelling reason to switch. I love a cool looking interface or a beautifully designed box, but my laptop and workstations are tools first and artworks/furniture second.

QFE everything he said.

I'm a huge computer dork - why do i run windows and not mac?

Mac = monopoly. You can't BUILD a mac, you can't take it apart and work with all the little itty bits on the inside - repairs are monopolized - everything is overpriced by INSANE amounts - etc etc (in comparison to PCs, which i was building when i was 10.)

My buddy's mac crashed a couple years ago. Mac wanted 1200 dollars to repair his motherboard. I could have done it for a quarter of that price had it been a PC.

I think Macs are great but WAY overhyped. The reason windows is so wonderful is because it's so STUPID. its greatest flaw is its greatest asset.

Me? I run Ubuntu - and only have windows on the side for painting/photoshop.

The day Adobe releases a Linux-compatible suite (yea right >>) is probably the day i'll never use windows or mac again.

I'm DEFINITELY going to get Windows7.

Supposedly - windows7 is windowsVista done right. That's good enough for me.

Why did macs get to be so huge in the past couple years? Because they finally gave up on the dinky systems they were running before and now have the same BUILD as PCs always have. The only way Mac could achieve "Super-Useful" status (where windows already was for everyone else) was to give up on being so unique and follow the windows route. which is why you can now install your version of windows on your mac - because deep down, Macs are built like windows now.

Yep, I'm a Mac Whore. I have never had an issue with my mac and everything works...all the time. I have had it for a little over two years and it keeps up to date pretty easily and I still have only used about half the memory storage.

A friend and I were walking in a plaza and we passed the Apple store. He asked if I needed to buy anything. I told him I didn't need to buy anything but I would like to go in, throw a bunch of Apple products on the floor and just roll in it because I adore the Mac so much. He thought that was weird?!?!!

I'm going to hold out with XP for as long as I can. Two years ago, I had to pay $25 extra to get this machine shipped with XP instead Vista, and Windows 7 is based on Vista. When it comes time to replace this machine, I'll probably get a Mac.

I miss the days when you could run mac on a clone. talking old school days. It can be kind of done. My friend has mac running on his hp laptop. I would be up for doing that.

Amazon: Windows 7 is 'the biggest pre-order product of all time'

"The launch of Windows 7 has superseded everyone's expectations, storming ahead of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as the biggest grossing pre-order product of all-time at Amazon.co.uk, and demand is still going strong," says Brian McBride, Amazon UK MD.

Had Vista: hated it. Downgraded back to XP: scraped by. I prefer Linux (openSUSE) and I'd kill to have a Mac, but unfortunately all the graphics stuff I use for work is stuck on Windows....

It's easy to be #1 when your audience is held captive by their software lol.

Window's got a couple problems Mac doesn't have.... They try to support WAY too much hardware, which leads to software bloat to handle everything and badly written drivers (remember all those irritating blue-screens?) Microsoft also engineered Windows without multithreading and in a huge, bloaty, object-oriented, monolithic design. It runs slow, it's incredibly memory intensive, it can't multi-task, and in an effort to make the computer more "personal", they turn off all security by default.

You want a computer than runs fast as shit and will never hang or crash? Buy a Mac or find yourself a friend who can properly configure and administer Linux.

I'm on a Mac, but have XP running on it as a virtual machine, though I hardly use it. I will probably upgrade to Windows 7 in a few months, once Bootcamp (Apple's program allowing Windows to run) supports Windows 7 and/or I get a copy of Windows 7 on sale.

If you have a .EDU email address, you can get Windows 7 upgrade for $30.

I guess if you make a product miserable enough(Vista), the demand to replace it will be great.

I've had windows 7 RC for the last year... not a problem
and if your clever you can get free versions of windows on the net

i encourage everybody to spend money buying newer versions of windows because at the end of the day the more money into windows the better the software

therefore my free software is better

just dont be dumb and take advantage of good software for free.

and the problem isnt usually in the software, its with the USER

They need to go back to XP... I get emails from MS Downloads of the Week and for them to be touting the fact that you download a virtual machine program for windows 7 and move over and XP emulator? Think about it... they know what works and what doesn't they just don't want to roll back be Le Shit! Shit! Shit! I expect the next version of windows to be based on XP, thus back on the Windows 2000 kernel.
