I like to sleep on my side with one leg straight and the other bent. Someone told me it was the "can opener" position.

You?

My favorite, most comfortable position is the one described by the OP.
But, it works out best if I sleep on my back.
Otherwise, I wake up with a broken neck (it feels like it), or my lower back gets thrown out, and I have to go to the chiropractor.
I know.
Weird...

I sleep in the middle of my huge bed I move around a lot haha but I usually sleep with my ankles crossed an my knees bent so the my feet are under my butt.

Alone, that can opener position sounds about as close to a description as I could get. I start there the rotate onto my back, then rotate to the other side. I have pillows all over the place with my head near the window, heat on diagonal on the bed.

With someone, little spoon. And I can stay that way all night.

Can opener. Just like wrestlervic. Mostly on side, facing outside the bed.

I'm an active and violent sleeper. I can fall asleep in any kind of position, but judging from the state of the bed in the morning and information from the few guys (and gals) that have been unfortunate enough to share a bed with me, I kick, squirm, yell, and generally cause trouble all night long. Strangely, I always feel very well rested and rarely remember my dreams, and I don't usually wake up in the middle of the night. All this is probably one of the reasons I remain single, much as I enjoy a nice spooning as I drift off.

Oh my god that is me exactly! I know what you mean about the pillow under head just right to get a good height and not have your neck cranked. I usually have it on the edge of the pillow.

Used to be a side sleeper all my life until the last couple years.

Just naturally started sleeping on my stomach (can't seem to stop it), and it's a bitch to find a pillow that suits me.

either on my back or on my right side to clear my nose. On the side I draw in both knees and somehow wedge my comforter between the legs. Usually one leg is above the comforter so I'm cooler. I'm also a pillow-flipper who prefers the cool side.

To fall asleep I usually have as much of me sticking out from under the covers, but I wake up completely covered.

After 10+ years of sleeping in the same bed I'm finally relaxing enough to hold hands with the bf while falling asleep.

I like the description of the can-opener, but I've also heard it being called "the flamingo." Same concept - one leg bent, one le straight down.

Also, HAVE to have at least one foot out for temperature control.

And of course, pillow has to be just right-- I reposition it multiple times until I have my perfect fit. I also don't like anything covering my face.

I'm usually in the foetus or yearner position...

--------------------------------------

http://www.flatseats.com/General/positions.htm

Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the UK Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service analysed six common sleeping positions - and found that each is linked to a particular personality type.

Your sleeping position

What your sleeping position says about you ...

Foetus
Those who curl up in the foetus position are described as tough on the outside but sensitive at heart. They may be shy when they first meet somebody, but soon relax. This is the most common sleeping position, adopted by 41% of the 1,000 people who took part in the survey. More than twice as many women as men tend to adopt this position.

Log
Lying on your side with both arms down by your side. These sleepers are easy going, social people who like being part of the in-crowd, and who are trusting of strangers. However, they may be gullible.

Yearner
People who sleep on their side with both arms out in front are said to have an open nature, but can be suspicious, cynical. They are slow to make up their minds, but once they have taken a decision, they are unlikely ever to change it.

Soldier
Lying on your back with both arms pinned to your sides. People who sleep in this position are generally quiet and reserved. They don't like a fuss, but set themselves and others high standards.

Freefall
Lying on your front with your hands around the pillow, and your head turned to one side. Often gregarious and brash people, but can be nervy and thin-skinned underneath, and don't like criticism, or extreme situations.

Starfish
Lying on your back with both arms up around the pillow. These sleepers make good friends because they are always ready to listen to others, and offer help when needed. They generally don't like to be the centre of attention.

The remainder of those in the poll said the position they fell asleep varied or did not know.

Professor Idzikowski also examined the effect of various sleeping positions on health. He concluded that the freefall position was good for digestion, while the starfish and soldier positions were more likely to lead to snoring and a bad night's sleep.

Professor Idzikowski said "Lying down flat means that stomach contents can more readily be worked back up into the mouth, while those who lie on their back may end up snoring and breathing less well during the night. "Both these postures may not necessarily awaken the sleeper but could cause a less refreshing night's sleep."

The research also found that most people are unlikely to change their sleeping position. Just 5% said they sleep in a different position every night.

What POSITION do you SLEEP IN?

The prone.

And on my stomach, head facing to the right. And there's a strange story behind it (I have a personal anecdote for almost anything).

As a child I slept on my back. Then one night when about 5 I looked up over the foot of my bed, and from above the mirror on the wall I saw a single large eye staring back at me! I called for my father, who came in, but he couldn't see an eye, and told me I was dreaming or imaging it. But when he left the room, the eye returned!

Afraid, I rolled over onto my stomach so I couldn't see the eye. And this scene was repeated night after night, for I don't know how long, I think for many months, and in time I became accustomed to stomach sleeping, still my preferred method. But in the beginning I remember it was awkward & uncomfortable.

Years later I learned the mystery: in that old ornate house, my wall mirror was held by 2 satin ropes, that joined in a satin medallion, attached to the crown molding at the ceiling. At that same time, my room's window combination of venetian blinds & curtains had been replaced with curtains alone, that were always kept partially open.

This allowed a small amount of light to enter the room, reflecting on the satin medallion in such a way to appear like an eye from my vantage point in bed. My father never could see it because he would either turn on the room light, or not look from my perspective. Plus, as I was later to learn a couple years later when I had to begin wearing glasses at age 8, my weak vision was already distorting what I saw for some time prior to that.

I knew the medallion was up there, but I thought the eye was inside it, and magical, because only I could see it. I solved it myself soon after I got my glasses, and my first wristwatch, both at Christmas.

One night I was in my darkened bedroom, admiring the watch's luminous hands. I was still wearing my glasses when I happened to look up and noticed the eye was gone. In its place was an ordinary glint of light on shiny fabric, a surface I couldn't previously appreciate before, far up near that high ceiling. I took my glasses off, and behold, the eye appeared! But by then stomach sleeping had become a habit for life.

According to the chart, I'm a foetus sleeper most of the time. Some nights I'm a freefaller. But those who have shared a bed with me know I can get into some pretty crazy positions.

Well, we tried to get some numbers on that, by informally asking some of your former bedmates. Here they raise their hands in reply to "How many have seen the freefaller position?" The final results tally may take a few weeks.

When I'm asleep, it's usually on my side, in wrestlervic's "can opener" position. If I'm really looking forward to sleeping, e.g. if I've had a long day, I've tended to drift off in a modified "starfish" position--on my back, arms raised up and resting on pillow. I love it when little babies sleep in this position--it's like they're surrendering to sleep. For adults this position could be described more succinctly as the "handcuffs" position.

There's a lot of "pillow abuse" (physical not sexual - well actually I do have this one favorite pillow "Robby" - he's always in the mood & he's a good listener too). Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the UK Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service analysed six common sleeping positions - and found that each is linked to a particular personality type.

Your sleeping position

That's so cool! I'm either a yearner or a soldier. However, as a soldier i usually fold my arms up under my chest, like a corpse or a mummy....I wonder what that means.......scary.

Lucky pillow.. haha!

When I'm not sleeping with someone (*waits for sexual commentary*), I sleep like CanadianSun -- holding something helps me fall asleep. If I'm sleeping with someone, I usually alternate between holding them/them holding me.

Ha, that could totally be me. I normally hold onto a pillow and my boyfriend slips in behind me.
