Who on here actually has the balls to cut their own hair?

I have a few guy friends who always do...

I got frustrated with mine today and tried it. The second I started I screwed it up BIG TIME.

I went to clip it thinking I had a 3 setting. It was on 1.

I now have a skin head buzz. Grrrrr.

Not since I was in high school - I had spent my haircut money on LSD so I had to not only cut my own hair, but also do it under the influence.

Since then I have occasionally done some minor manscaping but only while stone cold sober

I have never tried to cut my hair. I know that it would be a severe disaster. I will occasionally trim my own hairline. however I have had incidents in the past that didn't go well with that.

I can,but I'm too lazy to do it.

Yes I do cut my own hair. It stemmed out of financial necessity about a year or so ago. One of my roommates would stand in a dry shower with me and take a number 6 clipper to my head and just shave it all over. Now I do it myself whenever I need a trim and have my roommate take care of the length in the back.

Cut your own hair?

Yes, for over 45 years. Started when I was around 13, when I got fed up with barbers who wouldn't listen to me. I'd tell them what I wanted, and they'd proceed to do what THEY wanted, with MY hair, and MY money. They haven't gotten any of my money since.

I've used many methods & tools, making some mistakes in the beginning, but getting better over time, entirely self-taught. Since the early 90s I've used a vacuum Flowbee, along with electric clippers, which works well with my straight hair.

I've also cut my partner's hair for 3 years now, and he no longer goes to a barber, as I did for my late partner before him. We save hundreds of dollars a year on haircuts. If you have a hair type & style that's easy to cut at home, I recommend it.
Nov 04, 2009 3:09 AM GMT
I shave my head with electric clippers. Surprisingly, men's haircuts are getting expensive. The last time I paid for a haircut was over 10 years ago. I think it was $12 + tip for a high n' tight at a barbershop.

Plus, my hair grows fast and I like to keep it short. Can't afford to be paying for frequent haircuts.
Nov 04, 2009 3:52 AM GMT
Oh hell to the no!
I'd F' it up for sure..How do you even get to the back of your head?
I can wash it, but I can't cut it.... I have been known to trim it here and there, but a real hair cut, no way.
Nov 04, 2009 4:02 AM GMT
I tried it once with horrid results( had the white line in the back of my head, looked like you could insert quarters in it like a piggy bank), but I am not a fan of proffesional haircuts either since most stylists struggle with my thick hair

I stand with my back to a wall mirror, and look into a smaller mirror I hold in my hand in front of me.

Haha, I was just thinking a few hours ago how this would make an interesting forum topic. I've been cutting my hair since high school. I'm pretty good at it but lately I've been going to a barber. The last time I went to the local barber it was $17. Using a conservative estimate (30 hair cuts a year at $12 a hair cut for the last 8 years I've been doing it myself) I have saved at least $2880. And yes, I do screw it up from time to time and end up buzzing it all off (lol).
Nov 04, 2009 4:47 AM GMT
I cut my own hair for about 6years and was actually quite good at it. It took a long time and involved postioning mirrors strategically. I had to constantly remind myself that everything in the mirror is BACKWARDS.

I shave my neck and trim my upper sideburns and do a good job...but I've screwed up my neckline a time or two, but not anymore.

I'd never cut my hair however..... if it bothered me that much, I'd get
an appt. made and get it cut.

I cut my own... I used to be real picky, then after going through the fire academy where we had to shave it each weekend I got less worried. if I cut it and totally mess up, I'll just chop it all off. ha!
but I think I do a pretty good job with my clippers and shears. LOL

I find skinhead cuts kind of sexy. I can cut my own hair until I get to the neckline. Since my hair cut is pretty simple, I now just go to the local barber shop instead of a salon.

With the fad of "Auschwitz" hair cuts, and with the modern day clippers that have all kinds of guards, it is relatively easy for any guy to cut his own hair. Also, today's "bed-head" hairstyles can disguise a lot of mistakes.

But, if you want your hair to be longer in some places than others, or you want some kind of traditional hairstyle, it can be very difficult to get it right.

When I was in my early 20's, I used to cut my own hair. I couldn't see the back of it very well, and I always messed that up.

i cut hair professionally, and i can say if you're cutting your own hair you're 99% of the time fucking up in some way. i see it all the time and im always fixing my friends hair who think they can do it themselves. most men can't even buzz there whole head without missing places and having awkward longer areas.

my ex for one, he's been "cutting his own hair for ten year." and does a "great job" until i would sit there and pull all the hair he missed....

I have been cutting my own hair since I was in my twenties, I have gotten very good through the years. In the beginning there were sometimes where it had to all come off though, but if you do it long enough, you get pretty good at it, once you master blending, your really good.

Probably very true... for me it is a 2 or 3 day event. ha! I cut it, then its not till I style it that I find a few longer areas. So once I got the wax in it I don't wanna wash it and do it again. So I hide it for the day and fix it the next. If I still find issues I gotta do it the next day. hahaha!

I've been cutting my own hair for years. With scissors and clippers. It's all about patience.
Nov 04, 2009 6:07 PM GMT
I love my stylist but I'm fickle and usually wake up and realize that I want something different.
I have been cutting my own hair for about 6 months now. I actually use thinning shears, clippers and scissors... I have two mirrors in my bathroom, can trim my own neck line and blend the hair line.
I've been giving myself a pretty standard safe cut... I'm about due for a new one but think I'm going to try something fun and new.
I love being the palette of my own creativity.... in every way!

Been buzzing mine for about 3 years. My first attempt was quite frightening; the end result made me look like I had just started chemo. I got better and now it's a twice montly ritual that I LOVE!

I even started going south ( if you follow ) and buzz the whole body every month. Smooth is HOT.... now if only I could find someone to enjoy it

The last time I paid for a haircut, it was my for my senior prom in high school. It was the worst haircut, and immortalized in my photos forever. I have been using clippers and scissors for years on my own head, and have cut other people's hair on many occasions, especially when I was in college and most of my friends couldn't afford regular haircuts. The only stipulation was that everyone got the same haircut! (I don't really know how to cut hair any other way... lol). I've also taught a couple people to cut their own hair. Its mostly about patience, and now, I can cut from start to finish in about 15 or 20 minutes.

I shave my head every 3rd day. Takes no more than 10 mins infront of the bathroom mirror. Have been doing this for about 5 years now

I've saved myself tons of money and the aggravation of listening to incredibly mundane conversations and stupid gossip
Nov 04, 2009 8:54 PM GMT
I might as well do it on my own, because I always end up getting horrible hair-cuts. I once paid $60~ for one that look like it was done by a left-handed 5 year old using right-handed scissors.

I cut on my own for a bit- I was going for the 'butchered' look.

You should all shave your head at least once in your life. Just once. Or for good. That being head I love head shavers and dudes w/a nice head of hair. HeadBlade works just fine

I cant do it..id F*** it up big time..

But last week i decided to go for a trim..finally i had awesome hair..and the guy i finally found (as i found out that day) quit and no one would tell me where he went..So they stuck me with a spanish guy who spoke french or spanish..so i explained to him..i kinda want the messy James Dean/ 1950's look..

He practically shaved me bald...cut off everything..so i just took a deep breath and smiled said "good job man"..because i know its just hair..and it grows back so no need to get pissed..

So in your case..dont worry, your hair will grow back fast..but looking at your pic im sure you still look good!

(now you know to check the settings 2 times for the next time..lol)

We have a place that is a male hair cutting place for $10, but they can't refuse women, but they charge $250 for them , so no women go there. lol

You also get a free wash after your hair cut and also a massage. It's a great place. They have TV's at every chair. For that price it's not worth trying to cut it myself.

I just cut my partner's hair tonight. I plan to cut my own tomorrow. I wouldn't let a pig-headed barber come anywhere near our hair. Why should we pay someone to cut our hair the way they want? Barbers never listen to what you tell them, so about 45 years ago I taught myself to cut my own hair. Now I don't need barbers.

Yeah, I do it myself, but only for the last 30 years or so. Ever since the 2 color mohawk around 1979/1980, I've been doing it. You start to get used to the two mirror method and a slow patient approach. (Impatience is the most common cause of screw-ups and disasters.) Plus, I know exactly how my hair grows and where the cowlicks are.

With the buzz of the last 5 years, it's been pretty fast and easy. The only slow part is the trim on the back of the neck.

I used to cut it myself, even had some great styles in there. Just me and the clippers and ton of mirrors and some scissors. These days not so much, I'm lazy and the clean up was getting on my nerves. Of course my stylist will only trim the hair on my head, all other hair is still maintained by yours truly.

Offroadmarin saidBuzz cut = acceptable. Anything else = you're out of your mind.

Nah, It's also really easy if you have a long pony tail. Just even-up the ends once in a while and trim around the edges. I did that for about 20 years.

But now it doesn't grow so much any more, so I'm with the buzz-cutters. About 3 or 4 times a year. Turns out that when it starts growing back, mine naturally falls into a little cocks-comb in the middle. Some people think I pay to have that done.
