Apple's Magic Mouse

I just bought Apple's latest wireless mouse today, the Magic Mouse, and it's really good! Very ergonomic and elegant, the scroll and other functions are by touch alone on the mouse's top surface, like the track pad on a notebook computer. No wheel, no ball, nothing mechanical.

And like the previous mouse, left & right clicks are determined by where you press the solid top surface. In fact, not a single button or switch at all, except on the bottom, for On-Off when idle for extended periods.

Oddly, the documentation says you need OS 10.6.2 to use it, but my Mac is current at 10.6.1, suggesting .2 is really close to being released. The Magic Mouse installed OK for ordinary tracking, but wouldn't scroll at first.

It took me several manual attempts at calling for an online software update check before its Mouse Update suddenly appeared in the dialogue box (requiring around 60 MB!). After installing it, all the Magic Mouse features were enabled, including the touch scroll. No CD comes with the mouse.

It's really good, and I recommend it.

Apple tends to release grade A products most of the time.
I just wish I had the money to buy a new computer and a new mouse.
Although one thing I don't think I'll be upgrading anytime soon is my ipod.

I need to replace my Apple mouse. The little scroll ball keeps getting stuck so it's basically a useless feature. This happened within the first few months of buying the Mac a couple of years ago. This is my only complaint about the mechanical engineering of my Mac.

Yeah, the tiny track ball of the Mighty Mouse was not very reliable. I went through a few of them. I have better expectations for this touch pad surface on their latest mouse. But check for compatibility, since the documentation with mine seems to be saying it requires a dual-core Mac running Snow Leopard OS, which I have.

yeah, it took me a minute to figure out the necessary software update. now i want to touch my mouse all the time... that doesn't sound right. ;)

anyway, the mouse is exceptional and kinda sexy.

I have the dual core Mac but still on OS X. Usually someone will write a shareware application program for OS X(I'm hoping). I am using a shareware app for my current Mighty Mouse to make it behave more like a microsoft windows mouse.

Was just playing with the new mouse at the Apple store. The tracking ball on my current mouse always gets stuck, and I'm tired of cleaning mouse balls! Glad to hear it is working for you. I know it's new, but any feedback on battery life? The last mighty mouse had a terrible battery drain.

True about the batteries, as the rechargeable ones I used in my previous Mighty Mouse (and also in my wireless aluminum keyboard), tended to last less than 2 weeks of heavy daily use. At my second day of ownership I can't report on battery life yet.

But otherwise this thing is fantastic, very intuitive & easy. And just so elegant, as the pic in another post here shows. To quote the line from "Hello, Dolly!" --

I love mine as well (had to go to the apple store about 4 times to fine them in stock) my only complaint is that is is so insubstantial, it feels really small as i'm using it. I think I'll probably get used to that though.

I ordered one, should have it early next week. How has the battery life been so far? Any other comments?

I threw out my Might Mouse for just this reason. But the Magic Mouse is freakin' delicious. It's track pad functions makes everything so much easier. I would pick one up, you deserve it. icon_biggrin.gif

OK, I've been using the new mouse for a couple of days now. I love the track pad features, and the two finger swipe to browse back and forward a page is awesome!
