This is a potentially significant stepping stone on the way to better genetic therapies. Several years ago researchers tried to deliver the gene needed to treat ALD with a feline leukemia virus. Following the treatment, two of the subjects developed leukemia. Even more seriously - according to the researchers - the feline leukemia virus shell delivered the missing gene to something like 0.1% of the cells that needed it. The HIV virus shell appears to deliver a clinically more effective 15%. I haven't yet heard the rationale for why two such awful viruses have been drafted into this use, but I suspect it has to do with their efficiency at delivering their genetic cargo to host cells.
