Did anyone else watch this? Is it just me or was it just plain awful? I'm a huge Wanda Syke's fan -- loved her recent special on HBO -- but this was really bad.

Stand-up comedians can be amazing at what they do, but aren't necessarily always fit to be actors or present tv shows. The same can be said about actors doing stand-up or presenting, and the same thing can be said about presenters doing acting or stand-up.

Megan Mullaly was a great sit-com actress, had a terrible talk show.
Chelsea Handler wasn't a great sit-com actress, has an amazing talk show.

I thought the show was brilliant. For the first time ever, I sat through an entire late night hour. Her set is beautiful and she isn't as far from the audience as other shows. However, what I loved the most was the alcohol at the roundtable!

Of course all of the above aside, I believe the true spirit of the show will come up around episode 3. It's not perfect, but I was very happy to see a latenight show on a major network hosted by a lesbian. icon_cool.gif

What was it that made the show a bomb for you?

A Lesbian having a talk show? How awful. What would Rosie O'donnell, Ellen, and Oprah have to say about this?

I set the MacBook to record it, and I watched it this morning. Parts of it were funny, parts of it were painfully bad. Overall, meh.

Hahaha...that is a good question. It seemed in her tv circuit to promote the show most were happy for her (of course that could just be the front for when before an audience). However, you overlooked the qualifier of 'latenight.' Yes, the others have great day time shows, but this is a first foray into lesbian latenight hosting for a major network.

Much like cable news networks, I have blown the fact that she is a lesbian up a bit. (How many will tell you that straight up.) I'm not trying to push any others into the background, I am just proud of Wanda and glad to see numbers that support her show over other stuff FOX has had in it's place.

Preliminary results for her premiere: http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/11/08/wanda-sykes-show-premieres-100-better-than-spike-feresten-but-nowhere-near-snl/32944

I just thought it was WAY too politicized right from the get-go. She took a HUGE gamble alienating a good chunk of her audience that way, and I think it will be a gamble that she will lose and, consequently, lose viewers. It would have been one thing if her ra-ra Obama cheerleading routine were funny, but it was tired. The Bush bashing, even more tired. I tuned in expecting something fresh and funny and instead got more angry liberal ranting that we've heard delivered time and time again by other late night TV talk show hosts who did it better. Enough already. I just found the whole thing hard to watch, and I love Wanda Sykes.

Let me guess - you are a bush supporter and or a Republican, right?

I agree. It wasn't horrible, it wasn't great. I did enjoy the sex toy segment though, and "I'm gonna rape you" bouncing lady. But that roundtable was pretty weak.

That really isn't the point. The point is that there are lots of Republicans who probably also enjoy Wanda Sykes. Her show is on FOX, so to potentially piss off a good chunk of your audience from the get-go was just stupid in my opinion. I've always loved Wanda Sykes, but I found her really annoying last night. It wasn't fresh. It was hard to watch. She seemed uncomfortable. Even the audience seemed uncomfortable. You watch, the ratings of her 2nd show will plummet because what she did last night on the first show was just plain stupid on a network like FOX where she should be trying to find an audience, NOT lose them.

You do remember that she gave the speech at the White House Correspondent's Dinner, right? For Obama? And did you see her last special on HBO? Pretty political. And she's a lesbian. And black. And gay-married to a French woman. I don't think too many Republicans were watching.

I can definitely understand and agree with your feelings. I do have to give her kudos for the Obama humping video, but I do agree the political stuff was aged. I can also see how her approach ticked off an audience she needs in order to stick around, but I wonder if FOX didn't have a hand in it...in order to keep her with their tendency to shock portions of their audience.

I do, and I really enjoyed all of it. In fact, I actually watched the HBO Special twice. That being said, it doesn't change the fact that her approach right out of the box on her late night talk show was a huge miscalculation of WHO her audience might be. Of course there were some Republicans watching...and Independents...and even some Democrats who have grown just as weary of the constant political bashing going on ad nauseum on both sides. The last thing you want to do on the very first night of your show is seriously piss off a large chunk of the audience you're trying to win over so they will want to watch you a 2nd time...and 3rd time...and so on. She's not going to survive long, especially on FOX, just playing to left leaning Bush-hating liberals looking for an hour long Obama schmooze-fest. This is the very same reason why far left leaning radio shows like "Air America" simply couldn't survive. If her brand of comedy can't appeal to that broad-based middle ground, her show is doomed to fail...and probably pretty quickly.

I think that what happens when you switch off to a network that really censors tevelvision, althrough family guy is an exception. Uhhhh i love that show!
