Is it better to ignore?

I used to usually respond to all messages people sent me for chats whether they were interested in friendship or possibly more, unless there was no hello and it was just like "hi lets fuck".

I feel bad not to respond to people even if I know I don't like them, but lately I am just like I don't feel like responding to everyone, and once you respond you can't just get out of the chat so I am starting to see why ignoring people might be best. I used to hate people who ignored me, but now it makes sense to me. Not everyone likes everyone and why waste your time or theirs?

I usually politely reply that I can't chat because I'm at work when I'm online, but that I'm happy to reply to emails. That way (a) I can do it on my own time and at my leisure, and (b) if we're not clicking, conversationally, it becomes apparent pretty quickly.

yeah i mean i usually do that for people i am semi-potentially interested in. but to be honest when some 45 year old sends a message, and i really am not bothered by them trying but im still not gonna be interested i dont wanna lead them on.

I feel no compunction to respond to messages or IM. If I like the cut of someone's jib then I'll respond.

If some 45 year old sends you a message don't assume it is just to hook up, he could just want to talk or be friends. Even if I was single, I would have no interest in having a relationship or sex with anyone under 35 on this website or anywhere else!

jbed you are 100% right, and ill talk to anyone, I am a friendly guy. I am more referring to the guys who send sexual messages before even knowing anything about me.

I turn IM off if I'm busy or don't want to chat and on if I'm available. If in a chat and its going nowhere just say "thanks for the chat I need to go" and exit

PS thanks for being nice to us Old guys

Sorry hippy4lyfe that I misunderstood you, I don't get any of those (thank god that part of my life is over)! I have my partner, he and I very happy, we don't need anyone else for our sexual needs.

I'll respond to any email (yes, I'll even politely thank the hook-up emails for their interest), but I'll be a little grumpy about it if they are asking me to tell them something that's already in my profile.

Hippie4lyfe, I'm glad you clarified what you meant. I was getting angry reading this thread, before you clarified.

Being nice is never a waste of time.

Thanks for being nice to us old guysicon_smile.gif

We're not all looking to fuck.

I don't think there's any harm in not responding to IM's because, honestly, I inadvertently don't respond to IM's all the time: I leave my desk or forget that the site is on or have too many windows open or fall asleep and then see later that I missed IM's - and that includes from guys on my buddy list. I assume the same happens with other people.

E-mails I always try to respond to but I cannot deny that I am often forgetful and often let a lot more time pass than I originally intend before I write back. If long enough goes by, I end up deleting the message altogether. Oops.

Yessir, I am totally with you on that one. It's a shame that being stupid and/or crass isn't painful?

I guess it's because I'm an "old guy," but mostly the only IM's I get are from 20 somethings in Southeast Asia or Eastern Europe. Anybody else get these? Looking for American daddies, I guess.

    MikePhil,
You're not old enough to be a daddy. icon_wink.gif
