    Hi guys:

Not to toot the gay horn or anything, but what do you make out about the average gay person's intellect versus the general population. I mean time and time again it seems like most gay people have above average intelligence.

Why do you think causes this?

Do you think its the experience we go through in trying to hide it that somehow makes us more keen than the rest of society? Is it hormonal? Is it just that we somehow appreciate the "finer things in life"?

And also, I have this crazy theory that gay people come from sex-crazed parents. I'm only speaking from a couple people's experiences and my own, lol.

    Hi sexylatinboi,

Without looking at your profile, I can only assume that you joined this site very recently. Hang around a while, read the forum entries, interact with a few score people and then come back to us and hypothesize whether gays are more intelligent than our nongay counterparts. icon_wink.gif

Gay People Smarter than Straight People?

I've read some studies that claim gays have an advantage of several points over straights on standardized IQ tests. That's just on average, so there are still some pretty stupid gay guys, and some very brilliant straight ones.

But even if it's true that gays are "smarter" overall (however that's defined), it's not clear why that would be. Do we simply study more, because the ordinary youthful social distractions of the straight world are unappealing or unavailable to us? Do our brains develop fundamentally differently? Are we driven to achieve in an intellectual way, because society makes us fail in others ways? Or does a lifetime of being forced to find alternate solutions to life's problems make us more able to think out of the box?

It's all speculation as far as I know, and I have no proposals of my own to make. What I can say is that I find gay company more mentally stimulating than straight company, gay men to be more witty & clever than those other guys, and much more open-minded & flexible in their thinking, all things that appeal to me personally. I'll leave the clinical studies to others. icon_biggrin.gif

Spend an evening hanging out in any gay bar and you'll dispel the notion that gays are more intelligent than straights.

Have to agree with Red Vespa..except the part about society making us fail. I think it is society that has failed us. I sure as hell didn't ask to be ostracized by 90% of the population. I would have liked to have gotten married to the high school girlfriend, settled down and had some rug rats. And on top of that major disappointment, I have to endure the crap I do from so many ignorant assholes out there....
Yes, Red, a "lifetime of being forced to find alternate solutions to life's problems" seems a compelling theory...perhaps it has helped us to be more clever in surviving the trials and tribulations we face.
I do know, and pardon my prejudice, that I would rather sit and chat with a gay guy, as opposed to a st8 guy, all things being equal, any day....Maybe won't get as insightful an analysis on what led to the Phillies defeat in the world series...(oops stereotyping here) but, people who have had to do some struggling to survive, as opposed to having life handed to them on a platter, make for more well-rounded human beings, maybe even more clever, and is this not a form of intelligence?
P.S. Yes, my father sex-crazed; mom, of course not!

    Lol!

Exactly. We're human. Some gays are smart, some are stupid. Some are nice, some are mean. Some are whores and some are prudes. We are just as diverse as any other person because in the end, despite our sexuality, we're all just human beings.

    AGISM ALERT!
In my experience, which is obviously limited, I found gay men of older generations smarter than str8 counterparts. I always thought that this was because growing up gay in the '50's or '60's required developing a number of skills such as learning to read people carefully, discretion, subterfuge, acting, being wary, and no doubt others. It was probably easier for somewhat more intelligent guys to cope with being gay in a hostile environment.
Younger gays are not dumber, but I think they are a lot more representative of the general population than back in "the old days."

I think this is a stereotype that stems partly from our experiences in grade school. People tend to muddle nerds and gays in their minds, and tend to associate "dumb jocks" with being straight. I have found that, yes, some nerds are gay, but many or most aren't. And not all jocks are dumb. And not all dumb jocks are straight.

Agreed, but what is the mean? The extremes aside, what are most gays versus most straights? I would contend that on average gays are more intelligent & creative than straights.

Are there no shadows where you are?
I can see everything as day
Problems that you try to hide away
Pushing me aside (You're pushing me aside)

Could the winter calm come twice?
Because your heart seems so cold tonight
Thirst for substance somehow isn't right
It's killing me inside (It's killing you inside)
    Killing me inside

I don't wanna be where you are
I don't wanna be here even now
I don't wanna be by your side
    something isn't right
    something isn't right

    This is our last goodnight
    Say what you will
    Say all that you can
    Words have no meaning
When I've seen where you've been

    This is our last goodnight
    Say what you will
    Say all that you can
    This is our last goodbye
    This is where love ends

Are you so naive to right and wrong
How could you watch innocence forgone
Does what we've done ever really belong?
It wasted me away (I feel so wasted away)

God if you can hear me out alright
Please take these feelings for her inside
My chest hurts when I breathe tonight
It's wasting me away (You're wasting me away)
    You're wasting me away

I don't wanna be where you are

humanity has to deal with love and loss ... but there is something to be said with those terribly wonderful moments when a man falls in love with another.

when there is a spark in the eye of that person you are getting increasingly familiar. when there is budding centrifuge in every ephemeral touch.

the concept of men letting down their guard and committing to one another is so foreign to me that I am curious as to wonder if I made the surreal idea up somewhere in my mind.

... in the world of manhood, man's place is to hide themselves. this is what I have been taught while closeted. yet once paroled from such an existence and learning to feel confident in being a member of yet another minority group, there is power in expression.

there is a dialectic amongst those who are working to find improvement in themselves, in their closest acquaintances, and in their ration of achievements to mistakes.

there are instances of the beautiful letdown all around, however I'm not sure if being gay and functional - or learning to become such - would make someone smarter than heterosexuals. I would say that there is a different cultural lens, but to say one is higher or lower on the peking order ... might be a fallacy; i.e., the different, not better phenomenon.

Who would ever say that there were no brilliant, genius, gay men in the world. But who would ever say that they are, in general, smarter than straight men? Making a list proves nothing. In fact, I doubt that it can be proven at all.

I just wonder what you base your gay hostility on? Feelings of personal inadequacy? Gays are vastly more creative than straights. If you cannot comprehend that, I cannot help you. Perhaps you're playing in the wrong sandbox. icon_razz.gif

Imagine the thoughts of Michelangelo, etc., if they materialized at a gay bar and encountered a cluster of Abercrombie-wearing Britney devotees. Would the evening be a success?

Actually since Da Vinci's tastes were more ethereal he might want to hang at the bar. Mike & Caravaggio preferred muscle so they'd seek out the nearest gym.

How defensive you are with your personal attack. Because I don't say "WOW GAY MEN ARE SOOOO MUCH SMARTER THAN STRAIGHT MEN" that means I'm hostile toward gays? That I suffer from personal inadequacies? It's not even worth arguing with that sort of thing -- because really, by making such a silly comment you have proven that not all gay men are smart.

You seem to have left out Andy Warhol from your list. He was one of the most influential visual artist in some of our lifetimes. Although he might not be on the same level as the others in artistic capabilities, he most definitely was one an influential gay male artist.
