Really good news being from Buenos Aires, but the article stats that we are deeply catholic which is wrong. Most people here while baptized don't actively go to church. The church isn't as influential here as say Italy or Brasil. For some reason, Argentina sees itself as a satellite member of the EU and slowly taking steps such as Spain. I don't think there will be protest, or uproars over this. When people can't find work, kids are eating what they can from off the street, the inflation up and down every week, and still feeling the effects to extent of the economic crash of 2001, the issue of who loves who and who's fucking who isn't very important.

Actually Buenos Aires has since 2003 making it the first in America's I believe to have Same Sex Civil Unions. This is about gay marriage which is being supprted by Macri the Chief of Government in Buenos Aires; which is pretty cool since his party is traditional conservative, but I assume he's eyeing the presidency.

This is very interesting seeing as Catholicism is the state religion. Maybe this can help encourage Catholics in america to be more accepting of homosexuality.

This is great news about Buenos Aires accepting gay marriage. That is one of three South American cities along with Santiago, Chile and Montevideo, Uruguay that have always interested me. I have heard that all three cities are very beautiful places to visit. I am happy to see Buenos Aires taking the progressive steps to insure equality for all its citizens. icon_biggrin.gif

I am excited about this possibility for those living in Argentina and wish for and envision a day when other South Americans can enjoy a similar set of rights currently being denied and ignored.

The current government has always been at odds with the Catholic church and lays most of the blame on the catholic church for the "dirty war" with which the country suffered heavy oppression from the military juntas. The Catholic chucrch were allys of the military juntas during those terrible years of abductions, torture, and murder. Several members of the catholic church are currently serving prison time for their active participation with the military juntas, others are currently awaiting trials, while several others are refuged at the vatican.

The First gay marriage in Latin America will be held in Buenos Aires on the 1st of December! It's official! It was announced late this morning.

Actually, a large percentage of Latin America has passed laws giving rights to gay couples. Civil unions are legal in Colombia (since 2007, making it the first Latin American country to pass legislation at the federal level), Ecuador, and Uruguay. Same sex marriage is legal in Mexico City, and same-sex unions are recognized in other parts of that country. Civil unions have also been recognized in parts of Argentina for some time. Laws are at some phase of proposal or debate in Venezuela and Costa Rica. Add to that the great news from Buenos Aires, and you begin to wonder why the US is so frustratingly slow to keep up.

Catholic Church In Argentina Rallies Against Gay Marriage

    [quote]
Ninety-one percent of Argentinians say they are members of the Catholic Church.
The church is promoting the demonstration with the theme “We want a mommy and a daddy.” A reference to the fact that the bill would allow married gay couples to adopt children.

The measure enters the final round of voting with a sight lead, 32 senators in favor and 30 against. But 10 senators remain undecided and many have said they'll back the civil unions bill.

The president of the National Institute against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism (INADI), Claudio Morgado, said the civil unions bill “has the same construct as apartheid” and if approved would discriminate against gay couples who would be given an inferior legal status to heterosexual couples.
If approved, Argentina would become the first Latin American country to legalize gay marriage. The institution is also legal in Mexico City, but the federal government is challenging the law in court.
