I was just wondering if there were any guys on here that are active members of any foundations/organizations that are dedicated to making a difference, have it be either battling extreme conditions such as poverty, hunger, diseases, etc, to small things such as helping keep your community clean, volunteering in your local homeless/emergency shelter, etc.

I, myself, have been an active volunteering member of a few in my community for the past couple of years and I've recently been joining bigger organizations that are dedicated to battling more extreme conditions. This is something I do because it brings me happiness. It makes me happy to know I am helping make people's life easier and seeing a smile on their face just brings joy to my life.

These are some of the organizations I am currently a member and supporter of and looking forward to becoming more and more involved with:

    -Habitat For Humanity
    -Kiwanis International
    -Orchid Foundation
    -Big Brothers, Big Sisters
    -Life Rolls On Foundation
    -Surfaid International
    -Keep A Child Alive
    -Love, Light, and Melody
    -Room to Read
    -Charity: Water
    -Livestrong
-To Write Love on Her Arms
    -Freedom by Design

    *Something to make you think:

    TODAY.
In a corner of the world.
    Someone is HUNGRY, HOMELESS, HURTING.
    That SOMEONE could be YOU.
    People LIVE here and there.
Without LIGHT and out of SIGHT.
    Is that RIGHT?
    I'm an average Joe.
Just TRYING to make ends meet.
    Can I make a difference?
    ONE day.
In a corner of the world.
    A LIGHT went on.
    An IDEA was born.
    I am THE DIFFERENCE.
    Between JUSTICE and INJUSTICE.
    Between RIGHT and WRONG.
    The voice lives on.
When someone takes a stand and SAYS.
I am the END of POVERTY.
    I am a different PATH.
    IT'S NEVER TOO LATE.
I am BELIEF in your HUMANITY.
    I am saving the world.
    One ISLAND at a time.
I am a WAVE of COMPASSION.
I am the end of IGNORANCE.
I am the call for human RIGHTS.
    I am HUMAN.
    LOVE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.
    I am jobs NOT JAILS.
    I am clean WATER.
I am the hands that heal all MANKIND.
I am LIGHT and the gift of VISION.
I am the HEART that keeps a child ALIVE.
    BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.
I am the DREAM that becomes REALITY.
    I am GREENING our industry.
    WHAT ABOUT NOW?

*This words are taken from Chris Daughtry's video What About Now and all credit goes to him.

What about you? What knd of difference are you making?

    - HRC (Human Rights Campaign/Equality)
    - Gay & Lesbian Community Center of South Florida (GLCCSF, in process of being renamed)
    - ACLU
    - GALA Choruses (an international organization of gay & lesbian choruses)
    - Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC)
    - Dolphin Democrats (GLBT political organization in South Florida)
    - Lambda Chorale (mixed chorus for gays & lesbians in South Florida, my partner the co-founder)
    - The SMART Ride (Florida non-profit organization to raise money for HIV/AIDS agencies, my partner a founder)
    - Poverello (a Fort Lauderdale-area HIV/AIDS food bank and thrift store)

Well when I was in Charleston SC, i was part of a group called CHAMP, and I really liked it. Unfortunately I had to move and haven't found any organizations like that...not even on google...too much stuff to filter through to find stuff like that in the area.

I am a Volunteer for the American Cancer Society supporting Relay For Life to help raise awareness in the fight against cancer. It is our hopes that one day when a child hears that someone has cancer - rather than being scared they will say the American Cancer Society can help you - just call them they are there 24/7 and you will talk to a real person. icon_smile.gif

Every community has a food bank that would be happy to accept your time, talent or treasure... donate yourself or a bag of canned goods.

There are plenty of groups raising money for HIV?AIDS and a hundred other illnesses.

Give a little time to clean up a park or the beach. Even just picking up a can or paper helps.

If these are not your thing than brighten the soul, help out a museum or live theater. I run a not for profit and we can always use people or if you're too busy cash helps too. We all can make a difference

It seems like you are really active in the GLBT community. That's awsome! I've been looking into joining an GLBT organization in my area and learn more about it and get involved, but I'm not sure if we have any where I live. Ive been looking around, but no luck. All the ones I've found are up in North NJ. So we'll see...

The Nature Conservancy - one of the few "Environmental Groups" That actually does things, not just demonstrate and work for PR. In fact they were in PETA's "cross hairs" which only makes them a better group to be a part of.

Homeless outreach at my church. Also work with recent immigrants

Amnesty International (was actually VP in college chapter. woot.)
Oxfam (which I think is a terrific NGO)
    HRC
    Livestrong
    Save Darfur
    ACLU
    Young Democrats of America (YDA)/VAYD
And my hair is going to Locks of Love (as many here already know)
I need to get more involved in Access AIDS Care, too. I keep missing chances to assist them.
I also help out occasionally with the homeless in Portsmouth, VA through a battered women's shelter my friend works at called the H.E.R. Shelter.
I've done food drives and fed the homeless in other various groups too.

See, Vespa, I am not trailer trash... as you so presumptuously labeled me in the past. icon_evil.gif

I'm really glad to see that you guys are doing your part to make a difference! And may I add some of you have quite an impressive list. Don't forget that even the smallest things can help out.

Aquanerd - Have you done any work for The Nature Conservancy before? It looks like a great organization!

As well, what are some examples of the kind of work you have done? Have you traveled to any different countries to assist?

The only place I've been to is Dominican Republic where I went to an orphanage (Hogar Escuela Armando Rosenberg) in the heart of Santo Domingo. I spend four days there meeting all of the kids in the orphange and the surrounding schools. While I was there I helped fix and maintain some of the things around the orphanage to make the place a better living place for the kids but overall I was happy to be with the kids most of the time, playing and just knowing they were happy to be living in that orphanage instead of the tin-roof houses that surrounded it. It was a really great experience!

So one of the organizations that I am a part of, Life Rolls On, just posted this video today which I wanted to share with everyone on here because it was extremely touching and it kind of made me tear up. So enjoy:

*Edit = Just a little info about LRO. LRO is an organization that strives to help and be a basic resource for young people who have been affected by spinal cord injury. We use different kind of action sports to help bring a smile to their face and raise money for their benefit. I focus on the They Will Surf Again (TWSA) program in which we try to push the boundaries for people with SCI by taking them out to surf and showing them anything is possible!
