Dan Savage is awesome. He takes just the right approach at getting his point across without being condescending or angry about it, and he does it often-times with humor. I wish more straight people could hear his message.

I really became a fan when he got labeled a racist for pointing out that anti-gay sentiment on the African-American Community was a huge factor in the Prop 8 vote.

In this day and age, with the mindless use of words by people to ignorant to know what the hell those words mean, a man that is eloquent and thoughtful on such a wide range of topics, is a man to be admired.

Did you take the time to determine whether this was true or no?

I have been a fan of Dan's for quite awhile and it's been fun to see him develop as a speaker and writer over the last 20 years. His books are good. The Stranger is a Seattle oriented underground weekly he's the editor for which is a fun read and their blog the "Slog" is a lot of fun too. Talk about flame wars.
I have never been to Hump Feast which is Dan's annual amateur porno film contest but am told it's a hoot and always sells out. It's been fun to see him on The Daily show and Colbert too.

I have been tempted many times to put you on ignore because of your asinine comments in regard to race (the above statement is a good example). Here is what Dan Savage wrote.

    Black Homophobia

posted by Dan Savage on November 5 at 9:55 AM

African American voters in California voted overwhelmingly for Prop 8, writing anti-gay discrimination into California’s constitution and banning same-sex marriage in that state. Seventy percent of African American voters approved Prop 8, according to exit polls, compared to 53% of Latino voters, 49% of white voters, 49% of Asian voters.

I’m not sure what to do with this. I’m thrilled that we’ve just elected our first African-American president. I wept last night. I wept reading the papers this morning. But I can’t help but feeling hurt that the love and support aren’t mutual.

I do know this, though: I’m done pretending that the handful of racist gay white men out there—and they’re out there, and I think they’re scum—are a bigger problem for African Americans, gay and straight, than the huge numbers of homophobic African Americans are for gay Americans, whatever their color.

This will get my name scratched of the invite list of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, which is famous for its anti-racist-training seminars, but whatever.

Finally, I’m searching for some exit poll data from California. I’ll eat my shorts if gay and lesbian voters went for McCain at anything approaching the rate that black voters went for Prop 8.

Savage's initial rant blaming blacks for the Prop 8 vote was later "disappeared" from SLOG, as I recollect. It was an incredibly stupid charge, given the small percentage of voters who were black.

By the time Savage showed up on Colbert's show, he was blaming old people for the outcome.

I like much of what Savage does but he has a pretty broad conservative streak that ingratiates him to many people who can't abide more in-your-face types.

    Uh, isn´t it obvious?

a person´s colour has no relevance on their view of gays. 100% irrelevant.

A person´s view of homosexuality is created by their social context, upbringing and religion. Many many african americans grow up in contexts which are still very conservative and religious and therefore we would expect a higher level of homophobia than someone raised in a non conservative context. Thus tolerance is much higher in Western Europe than america as religion has almost no role in public life and there are vastly fewer evangelicals or catholics.

he was just being over elliptical....

Eh, all is forgiven. He's incredibly entertaining at his speaking engagements, and makes so much sense. It really is a shame that he's preaching to the choir most of the time (LGBT, college kids).

Everyone should check out his books. The Kid and The Commitment are great reads, though they are slightly repetitive.

His comment might be stupid but it is not racist. Learn your definitions; or just ignore me. Whatever is easier for you. When the word is used incorrectly I will call anyone on it. Cheers! icon_cool.gif

And you are missing the point? Do you realize how fucked up that makes you sound when you say that you became a fan once he was labeled a racist? It makes you no better than the people that quickly label people racist.

And when did I ever say that he was racist? Maybe you need to learn some reading comprehension. I posted what he wrote, commented on your statement, and then agreed with Obscenewish. When did I ever call him or you a racist?

I'm not entirely sure how to feel about Dan Savage. He seems benevolent enough to gay men. But I've also heard he has transphobic tendencies, doesn't believe in male bisexuality, and has said things to suggest women "asked for it" during certain rape situations.

I wonder if Dan Savage is here...or I would love to hear his perspective on this site.

I don't really understand why people label him negatively. Facts are not racist, the majority of black people in America oppose gay marriage. You'd think black people, after so many years of Jim Crow laws and civil right movt would be more supportive or understanding of suffrage...(<~this sounds borderline racist)
