I had posted several months ago about a position I had applied for to go work the summer season in Antarctica , well the deployment date had come and gone so I figured I wasn't going to get the opportunity to go and would have to reapply next year.

Well to my surprise I got an e-mail this past week asking if I was still able to go as they had a position open up, I shot one back letting them know I was indeed able, so next week I fly from Detroit to L.A. to Sydney to Christchurch and finally to Antarctica YAY!!

I think this is quite possibly the coolest thing ever ( pun unintended ) and I am really excited and freaking out a bit as well. Also for the return trip I am allowed to set my flight to return from New Zealand, so I can take the time to wander the country if I choose ( what a perk! )

I'm thinking Santa dropped an early Christmas gift off for me icon_biggrin.gif

do not freeze your dick, it hurts like .. well, hell.

enjoy the icebergs , don't take a walk on the coast, it tends to collapse into the ocean.

is there an Antarctica Pride ?
If not, i think you should initiate one.

Congrats! enjoy and have a great time

Don't think those jockey thermals will work well. when you get to new zealand you should buy some wool ones from there. they are expensive but work quite well.

They actually supply me with a ton of extreme cold weather gear including heavy weight long johns ( they recommended my buying some lighter weight ones ) as well as my work clothes.

All I need to pack is clothes for my off time and gym clothes, They supply everything else.

Been on the ice since early december and am really loving it, took a while to get used to the dorm style living but the weather has been great and it hasn't been all that hard to adjust to the constant daylight.

Started a really bad Blog with some pretty cool pictures, feel free to check it out.

Been here since early December, I was hired as an alternate and they called me mid season to come down, as an added bonus I get to extend my return trip at the layover of my choice, either New Zealand, Australia or Hawaii... I'm thinking NZ for a month or so.

It is, and the travel opportunites are fantastic.. many of the people here spend time traveling to other countries on the companys dime when they redeploy... nice benifit I'd say icon_biggrin.gif

Yes, the Antarctic polar bear is a particularly pernicious pest.

    Awesome!!!!

    <---Super jealous.

Go ice fishing for me. I'll send you a harpoon if you will slay an Orca for me. I want some rare blubber to make oil for my decorative lanterns in my black/white themed bathroom.
