What does it mean to be called handsome?

Websters describes handsome as being "having a pleasing and usually impressive or dignified appearance"

What does it mean to you?

When I hear that word I know the president/CEO of the company I work for is nearby, I feel like screaming RAPE!

I really feel she actually doesn't know my name; just "Handsome" Then I have to follow her around like Miranda Priestly. She's intense.

If someone says I'm handsome, I take it to mean that I'm good-looking in a mature way.

If someone calls me "Handsome", I understand that they're dying to get my pants off, so I usually save them the trouble and drop trow on the spot.

Most men are "handsome" in the right lighting or in a tuxedo.
Some men are "pretty". They become models -or trade.
Few are just raw n "sexy".

    Handsome:

    1. having an attractive, well-proportioned, and imposing appearance suggestive of health and strength; good-looking: a handsome man; a handsome woman www.dictionary.com.

I take the word to mean someone who is genuinely sanguine in their appearance. Someone who has a natural allure and needs no cosmetic ' improvement. ' To be handsome in mine eyes is to have a wonderful spirit that is being channeled through a dignified, gentleman-like vessel.

It's funny that this thread comes up, for I have gotten into the habit of referring to a young man on this site - to his chagrin - as " handsome " because he serves as an exemplar specimen of such a wonderful word.

well I like to think of it in terms of how girls are described sometimes. wherein there is two ways. you can either call her "hot" or you can call her "pretty". whereby "hot" just denotes blatant sexual appeal, and "pretty" denotes classy mature dignified good looks.

I guess it's the same with guys, except "pretty" becomes "handsome"

I think anyone can be cleaned up and look "handsome". Just depends on the clothes and other factors -- good lighting doesn't hurt icon_lol.gif

Handsome is a guy with above average looks and appearance. Young or old. I hate saying someone's "HOT" for some reason. Handsome mostly has to do with a person's face to me.

theantijock said I wouldn't call a prettyboy handsome but I've used the phrase "she's a handsome woman."

Bea Arthur was a handsome woman. George Clooney is a handsome man.

Well I would agree with George Clooney.....Bea Arthur? Hmmmmmm......

    Dunno bout that! icon_biggrin.gif

Handsome is a compliment as far as I am concerned so my definition of Handsome is....

When someone calls you it, say thank you!

Handsome = Masculine & Very Good Looking
Cute/Adorable are more diminutive states of "handsome" in terms of masculinity not necessarily aesthetics

Whatever the case, if someone offers a compliment no matter if you agree with it or not, "Thank you" is the only appropriate response.

I think a handsome guy is very confident with himself and is just naturally elegant, with good manners.

through the years I've heard a lot of older folk make the statement, he, she or they live handsomely, or someone was rewarded handsomely for good behavior. I like how you all described the word "handsome" above, but I think a big part of being handsome is actions. we've all met people whose looks lost their value as soon as they opened their mouths, and those who were mediocre at best untill you realized how well they act in treatment of others. You could replace the word "pretty" with "handsome"and make the old saying come out - "handsome is as handsome does"

    There's handsome and there's cute.
    Both are good looking.
Cute is a more boyish look.
    Handsome is more studly.
