Hi all, I'm traveling to Brazil in March, and going to both Sao Paulo and Rio. I'm curious as to the differences in the gay scenes bw the two cities, and just the overall differences in people bw the two cities that I can expect. I mean, I know that Rio is a partying beachy culture and Sao Paulo is more like the NYC of South America when it comes to business and population. I've heard and read plenty about both cities, but wanted to get some personal opinions. Any native Brazilians care to comment or travelers who've been to both?? If you've only been to one or the other, what was your respective experience like?

    Thanks!! icon_cool.gif

Hello from Argentina! I have been to both...São Paulo in my opinion has the better nightlife of the two and Paulistanos (people of São Paulo) are to me hotter then Rio. There is also to consider there are better places to eat in SP and shopping is amazing (you can´t do this as freely in Rio due to crime). You also have near by Santos; which is about an hours drive from SP; which has beautiful beaches. Some places of mention near SP to check out São Sebastião, Toque Toque Grande, Maresias (beautiful). SP is more cosmo and has a larger gay community then that of Rio.
Rio is beautiful visually and the beach life is amazing, I found safety to more an issue here then SP as it´s surrounding by villas, you need to be more careful at night, watch your drinks and who you take up to room if your hotel allows it. But if your after the beach for your trip then I would hit up Rio, the scene is a little more mixed and most of the gay guys hang out near Ipanema, I didn´t find the nightlife very interesting in Rio due to the fact I´m Buenos Aires and they just can´t compete ;). SP does give us a good run. But the scenery is amazing.
NOTHING as ever happened to me in Rio, just use common sense. When I go I leave my nice watch and phone at home and take one I don´t care if it gets stolen or broken during my trip, and after that all you need is a nice body, smile, and speed to enjoy Rio!

If your able to do both I highly recommend it!! icon_smile.gif

I hope you enjoy your trip!!!

I've been to both and definitely prefer Rio... the beach scene at Ipanema is amazing --- cruising in the waves can get pretty frisky. The people are fun and friendly and it has much more of a casual vibe. For an experience ride the public busses and hold on tight- they are a trip.

Sao Paulo I'm not a big fan of, it's huge and spread out and not as user-friendly as Rio, not a lot of areas you can walk around and clubhopping can mean spending some time in traffic.

In both places you'll meet hot friendly Brazilians and have a lot of fun, just use common sense...don't look like you're rich, watch your drinks, etc.

I'll take Rio any day over Sao Paulo.
Sao Paulo is overcrowded, and the air is dirty.
Rio is physically beautiful, the air is cleaner, and the men are equally hot (Brasilians are just HOT!).
I love Le Boy Bar in Rio (in Copacabana, actually). But, as far as where to stay, I think I would recommend Ipanema (or Leblon), which is really close to Copacabana, but less crowded and less, well, seedy.

If you do go to SP, you might do well to stay in the area around Paulista Avenue--a bit more tourist friendly. There's a cool restaurant in the area, with a huge fig tree in the middle of it--Just ask for "The Fig" restaurant, and people will point you in the right direction. It pretty, and romantic.

I love Brasil, and in general the Brasilian people. Friendly, good looking. What more can you ask for?

I'd have to agree with most that Rio is the place to Party. The beaches are wonderful, and there are some hot spots like Lappa at night.

But if given the chance ... I'd go to Salvador, Bahia before both... Oh the memories there but i admit according to the pictures posted as examples of "best ofs", you might not find the men to your liking... But i was in my glory and they LOVED me.

If you want night life, why do you bother going to SP when you could go to London? If you want the beaches, a safe place and a gay friendly city, skip these two megalopolis and go to Florianópolis. Just to give you an idea, the main gay party of the country ("The Week") happens in 3 cities: São Paulo, Rio and Florianópolis. Note that Florianópolis (Floripa to the locals) is a MUCH smaller town, yet it has a disproportionally large gay scene, and you could choose between 100 beaches, from the most high-end (jurerê internacional) to the unexplored, almost exclusive to the fishermen. SP and Rio are so commonplace... Florianópolis is much safer and cheaper (if you choose one of the lovely seaside hostels)

This is a pre-planned trip through my grad school. The destinations are final and not up for debate....not that I'm complaining!

The first gay bar I ever went to was in Rio. It was an awesome time...

I think there's some truth to the stereotypes that Rio is more easy-going and party-oriented than Sao Paulo, but you're gonna love the night life in either city. The real question is where you're going to enjoy the rest of your time, and you just can't beat the beaches and natural beauty of Rio.

Men in Sao Paulo are paler and more European looking, the city's population has a heavy Italian composition, they are gorgeous! Men in Rio are generally more tanned, have great bodies and style. As for Rio's scenery, it just can't be beat.
