Hey. I am just starting to come out to myself, friends and family and find reading really helps clear things up in my head. Just curious if you guys know of any good books about being gay, coming out, etc. I've looked around on Amazon.com a little but thought I'd see if you guys could recommend one. Even a good autobiography would be great. Thanks so much! Happy Holidays.

"Nights in Aruba" by Andrew Holleran. It's a novel, so it doesn't offer any advice, but the themes had a profound effect on me, and I like Holleran as a writer. Frankly, anything by him is worth reading for his exploration of the gay experience.

I've read quite a few autobiographical books about coming out and being an athlete. Billy Bean (MLB), Esara Toualo (NFL) both wrote great books. Dan Woog also wrote Jocks and Jocks II, both good books about the collegiate trials and tribulatians of young men growing up gay in college. I also read another book just a few weeks ago called The Best Little Boy In The World by John Reid. This was a true story too, but written under a pen-name and published way back in 1973. It detailed many of the events he had in the 60s. Seems a bit outdated these days, but still interesting.

I'd recommend Mr. Right Is out There: The Gay Man's Guide to Finding and Maintaining Love by Dr. Kenneth D. George. The title is a mouthful but as a non-fiction book it is really great because it talks about coming out as well as the relationships you will find yourself in--I mean, that's what this whole process of coming out is all about anyway, right?

The book makes the connection between yours (and your future partner's) ability to be comfortable with yourself. Accepting yourself as you come out will have a huge effect on the relationships you will have, so I like this book for bringing this point to light.

    Good luck with everything!

Thank you so much! All these books look great. I went into a bookstore today to buy a couple and I ran into some people I went to high school with. I'm still not out and really embarrased with being gay so I didn't have the guts to buy them. Uh! It's all a process. I'm going to start ordering off of Amazon I think.

It looks like "The Frontrunner" is going to be a movie scheduled to come out in 2009. That should be great!
