This question is more for New Yorkers (or those that visit the city a lot) but tips from anyone are welcome.

Anyway, I'm flying out to NYC on the 11th and staying until the 16th in Chelsea. Now, since it has been quite a long time since I've been to New York can anyone tell me what the "it" places are nowadays? Doesn't have to be a gay bar/club because I'm not too much into that scene in LA to begin with (unless it's the east coast equivalent of The Abbey, then that's a whole different tale). Also good places to eat, hang out...etc. etc.

Avoid Balthazar. It is totally overrated. What do you like doing?

I don't live in NYC anymore but for a visitor I can reccomend some nice places -

For Brunch one of my favourite places is a little cafe in the west village.. its called the Bus Stop cafe.. you can read more about it here -
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/bus-stop-cafe-new-york

This is a very touristy place but still worth it - http://www.theviewnyc.com/
Its a revolving restaurant on the top floor at Marriott Marquis times square. The food is ok but its the only rooftop revolving restaurant in NYC and the views are great.. I went there about 2 years ago and it was like $40 for a buffet dinner... not too bad.

If you like more pretentious stuff then check out the Lobby bar at the Mandarin Oriental hotel... again the views are stunning... and they have some nice cocktails.. but quite expensive. http://www.mandarinoriental.com/newyork/

More pretentious places are the Rose club at Plaza Hotel... not sure how it works these days but it was exclusively for members on certain days of the week... http://www.fairmont.com/theplaza/GuestServices/Restaurants/TheRoseClub.htm

Some other great restaurants are -

Asia de Cuba (asian / cuban fusion food) at the Morgans hotel

Porcao - an excellent Brazilian steakhouse.. all you can eat.

Spice Market - very sexy restaurant in the meatpacking district... excellent drinks, dessert and food.

And my personal favourite - Gascogne in chelsea... its an unpretentious french restaurant.. love the atmosphere... love the food.

Also check out http://www.hudsonhotel.com/ - it has a nice trendy bar where a lot of people hang out.. mixed gay/straight crowd... usually very upscale and sexy... haven't been there in a while but it was fun.

Sorry I don't know any gay places in NYC.

if your looking for clubs...friday night huge at hotel amalia, no cover and saturday is big at providence cover is 20. those 2 places are only gay on those days and draw a huge huge crowd!! I was there last weekend, had a blast!! Otherwise I typically hang out in hells kitchen or chelsea, cute gay clothing stores, for food....if you like sweets....visit buttercup bakeshop on 52nd and 2nd and hit up the ever so famous gyro stand on 56th and 6th....or it might be 53rd....they open around 8pm...the line is always long!...trust me on this, it is worth it. GL! have fun, I looove NYC, went to school out there, moved back to chicago (doesnt compare) but i head back to nyc multiple times a year icon_razz.gif

If you're staying in Chelsea, go to Barracuda.

Forget about Barracuda. Go to Gym Bar if you like sport or G lounge if you are professional

for dining, head to chelsea...there are a bunch of great places on 8th Ave from 16th - 23rd. in soho, one of my favorite places is Lucky Strike (http://www.luckystrikeny.com/). bunch on sunday is great at cookshop in chelsea, or belcourt in the east village. make sure you make reservations at both.

if you are coming during the holiday season, head to union sq and check out the christmas market they have...great little shops with some cool gift ideas. shopping in soho is always good.

another cool thing to check out is the highline...an old elevated railroad on the west side in the meatpacking area. http://www.thehighline.org/

for bars/clubs, on fridays check out rockit at amalia (55th btw 7th and broadway) and on saturdays check out Club 57 at Providence on 57th btw 8th and 9th aves. in chelsea check out barracuda, which is one of my favorites.
