A coal-in-your-stocking holiday for you?

It may be for us this year. We weathered the US economic meltdown OK, having extravagant Christmases in 2007 & 08. But this year is looking different, our savings hit by hubby's medical emergency in Oct-Nov, which is still costing us, so we have to keep as much as we can in reserve for unanticipated expenses that keep popping up.

I wish I had my youngest son's optimism. When he had just turned 5 as Christmas approached, I'd hung the stockings from the fireplace mantle. One day he was misbehaving, and I pointed to his stocking and said he'd get coal in it for Christmas if he didn't shape up.

He gave me a puzzled look, and I realized a little kid in 1996 seldom saw coal in the US, and didn't know about that old adage. So I explained coal was this black lumpy stuff you burned for heat, and that's all bad kids get for Christmas.

"Oh!" he exclaimed, with his brightest smile, "We can have a bar-b-que!"

I collapsed laughing, my fatherly sternness instantly destroyed. I wish someone would say something equally silly right now and make the prospect of coal-filled stockings for us less unpleasant.

How do your own holidays look?

Take the coal and ask a clench-butt friend to turn it into diamonds.

I have no idea what we are going to do this X-mas, yet. This will be our first just by ourselves. We still have to discuss whether we are going to do presents or not. I'd love to lie naked by a beach or pool somewhere.

Bob, its going to be a wonderful holiday for the both of you as you both pulled through this year, you both are going to be OK and you have each other. Time to be grateful.....

I expect to have an awesome Christmas. Probably spend it here it at home with my bf and along with family and friends. There has been some discussion about taking a trip for 3 days during the week between Christmas and New Years, but we haven't decided yet. I know there will be some entertaining, some party going and certainly some time for appreciation.
