The trouble with sarcasm

Apparently there is a facebook group called 1,000,000 against Obama moving Christmas.

This group cites articles that don't exist and states that Obama is trying to move Christmas to January 8th in order to... I don't even know... they didn't give a clear reason.

So anyways I guess a lot of people joined because they thought it was sarcastic and hilarious... and it is funny, assuming you take it as sarcasm. But.... there are a lot of people who have made posts to the page saying how horrible it is that Obama would do such a thing, and that he a socialist just like Hitler.

I don't understand how people can be that stupid. Really, I can understand not catching the sarcasm, but to believe that it's true? REALLY?

I don't care what you think about Obama, that isn't the issue here.... that is just SO blatantly not true that it hurts me to see people fall for it.

    Thus ends my rant.

Same people that take the bible literal.

Some people just suffer from stupidity. If it was not as controversial to diagnose them, I'm sure it would be quite the pandemic.

It's unfortunate that a good number of people in our country have become so dumbed down...I actually call them Sheople (sheep+people). They spend their lives running around in confused circles waiting to be told what to do next, and unable to think rationally on their own.

...and this affirms my belief that a lot of us don't comprehend nor care to understand sarcastic humour as opposed to the slapstick crap we're so used to. People are stupid.

You know, President Roosevelt (Franklin) actually succeeded in having Thanksgiving moved a week to create a longer shopping season before Christmas. I don't see why President Obama couldn't have Christmas day moved to what is now Epiphany. Why not? I think he might want to do just that.

Isn't Epiphany on January 6th? I haven't checked; I just thought it was.

It reminds me of a friend's story, how The Onion ran an article citing that Congress had threatened to move to Memphis if a new Capitol wasn't built.

    http://www.theonion.com/content/node/27828

Evidently, the People's Daily in China ran a report of the outrageous Americans (as if we don't give enough real reasons for such a report) on the front page of their international news section. I'm sure somebody was on the bread line the next day.

Our whole society operates on a sliding scale of stupidity.
Some people just contribute substantially less than others.

Can we please make my birthday a national holiday?

The astonishing thing is that when Christmas comes and goes on December 25th, these same people will hold Obama accountable for their belief that it was moved anyway.

It's like the poll on the show,"The Colbert Report" in which the majority of conservatives polled actually didn't think Stephen Colbert was making fun of conservatism. They took him at face value.

The problem isn't sarcasm or parody, it's the dumbing down of America.

The trouble with sarcasm is that it's often overused. You can't expect everyone to get it. That's the whole point icon_smile.gif

As someone already brought up the Onion, if you read some of the YouTube comments, quite often you'll see people who have are convinced it's real. No matter how ludicrous.

    True, true,

It just sucks that instead of having the intended effect of sarcasm it actually feuled a fire of stupidity.
