California's First Openly Gay Speaker

Democrat John Perez of Los Angeles is slated to become the highest ranking gay politician in state history.
The Assembly speaker is the second or third most powerful position in state politics, after the governor and the Senate president pro tem.

Perez is a political newcomer, only having served in the Assembly for one year. That means this cousin of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus could serve as speaker for up to five years — a long reign in the era of term limits. Perez, in other words, should have plenty of time to solidify his power base and build influence. His long tenure also promises to increase the influence of the Assembly and help advance the cause of gay rights.
Yes and he is also only just another man, and thus not perfect! How sad to be only known of because you are a homosexual; it's like dehumanising a person.

For one, no one said he was perfect. I think you're missing the point. Metta8 was merely posting this news item as a relevant issue for LGBT Americans, regardless of your political stripes or affiliations: this is just one more openly gay politician, which is a good thing for us.

And as for the whole dehumanizing thing...I would think one makes lots of sacrifices going into politics, and choosing what people recognize you for can be one of them.
