Yep I'm a boxer.. have enjoyed it for many years. I got sick of fetishizing it and literally went to a gym and asked them if they could teach me. They did. Hell I competed in the Folsom Fights at Hank Trouts in 99, defeated my opponent and won by a KO. And those guys are now great friends.

If you like this.. DO it. Ive coached guys who needed to exercise their Warrior inside and boxing did this for me. Its a helluva way to gain self confidence and keep guys from messing with you. Yea, its also a way to meet men also.

There are more of us than we think and the wrestlers dont know the thrill rush and rush it is to take a punch and give a punch.

I haven't actually been in the ring, but the training is a kick-ass workout.

I just started boxing and I love it. I'm actually using a lot of the martial arts techniques I learned when I was younger. The gym I go to also offers kickboxing and muay thai, both of which I wanna try further down the road

This is a really fascinating thread to me. I am a 59 year old gay guy who started boxing amateur at 17. I am a third generation boxer as my grandfather and my dad also boxed, although I was considered the most proficient of the three of us. In the late 60's and 70's, fighting at 135, 147, and 154 I was 27-6 w/ 12 KOs in sanctioned tournaments although as a Golden Gloves fighter I never got beyond the semi-finals.
I realize that the world of boxing is very macho, and possibly homophobic, but although I was not aggressively "out" in my 20's I am pretty sure that most of the guys at the three Boston area gyms I trained at at various times knew I was gay. It was sort of a "don't ask, don't tell" scenario. Having said that, I did get called "faggot" by a few guys I competed against but I sorted them out quickly. (I also had to endure a few ethnic slurs; not every boxer is a gentleman.)
I know for a fact that one guy I fought in the amateurs was gay, and he also was presumed to be so by those who knew him well. At least two others came to realize they were gay; one of these, whom I sparred numerous times, turned pro and, allegedly unable to handle his sexuality, started to drink heavily and was killed in a car crash.
I was 40 the first time I realized there was a sort of gay boxing underground, if it can be called that. The problem for me, beginning in the 80s with phone chats and later on, as the internet unfolded, was that many of the soi-disant boxers I met were simply into getting their rocks off. Only a handful had real boxing training; some of them have weighed in on this thread. But I can't tell you how frustrating it is to travel some distance and find that the guy you plan to spar is more interested in sex than actually boxing.
At my age I still train and spar, more in the interest of health and fitness than in actually fighting. At this point I have now met quite a few genuine gay boxers, and I only wish I had met them 20 years ago.

Yeah, I've been boxing for about 10 years. I live in Dallas now, but Richard Lord's in Austin was a great place to go--several lgbt (well more lesbians than gay), but it is a regular old boxing gym. I was able to spar there 2 or 3 times per week.

I've moved to Dallas now and go to Colossus boxing. Not sure of the vibe there, but about 90% are Spanish speaking only. I know a couple of the slang words for gay but have not heard them while I've been going there.

I boxed in the Marines for a couple years and still respect the heck out of the sport. I haven't even watched a bout in a few years though. It's definitely intense, I was amazed how much I liked it and excelled since I'm so laid back. Maybe I can get my pussified friends to start up with me.

Greetings Gents,

My apologies for not finding this site sooner... 41 year old, 6 foot 185 lb trained boxer. I never thought I was good enough to box until I picked up the sport at that age of 28. Took to it like a tadpole in water. Returned to New York met a new trainer, have been kicking ass ever since. I am currently 4-0 with 2 TKOs as a Master boxer and finding it hard to get matches. Founder of the GBL: Gay Boxing League that I run out of the gym I train at. Hey BoxerTerry and HarberFighter? I cannot wait to get back out to LA. Yes, SoDakGuy that article on gay boxers is about me and the guys I train. We are always looking for other gay boxers to help them learn the sweet science and get better. Yes, there is a major erotic aspect to it. I know this first hand since I have written a book about it, THE PUGILIST: Erotic Boxing Adventures. http:\www.THE-PUGILIST.com But there is also the real side to engaging another man in the ring, because he wants to kick your ass just as much as you want to beat his.

As for the Gay Games, I heard there still is boxing in them, they just need enough participants. The Gay Games will be in Cleveland, OH in 2014. I strongly recommend we gather together to get some matches going. I will gladly participate to show what I can do in the ring. This IS NOT a sissy sport!

Keep your guard up and come out punching.

For anyone that missed my post on the other topic If you're still wondering where all the gay boxers are... they'll be gathering next weekend in Sugar Grove, IL for an event known as Boxing before Burgers and Beer. Sparring of all levels for three days will be going down. For past vids of the weekend do a search on YouTube for BBBB and check out the action for yourself. And yes, I am holding back against my buds. I'm still waiting on that 'other' tough gay boxer to come and knock me down a peg or two. Any takers?

Keep your guard up and come out punching.

Hey Man great posts!

I live in DC but visit NYC often. If you don't mind, I'll look you up when I return next time. I am a beginner, so learning the basics right now, but would not mind sparring and training with a trained professional who is also gay.

Hey Mike,

Good to hear from you. I'd love to give you some pointers when you come up to NYC. I figure if I can't find other tough or competition orientated gay fighters I'll have to make them.

Keep your guard up and come out punching.
