Well now wait a minute. I think it's just as overblown and partisan to claim that somehow Republicans, as misguided as they may be, don't care about the country. I love how everyone's trying to claim moral superiority because they have the biggest wood for 'Merca, as our previous Executive would put it.
Neither party is a party of fiscal responsibility. Neither will actually force us to be competitive either. We have substandard schools because we refuse to make teaching competitive. We are hemorrhaging jobs because we refuse to allow labor to be displaced by more efficient manufacturing methods and technologies, which is the only way we're ever going to make physical goods again. We have outrageous pensions - an entire generation that promised itself a mountain, and saved a molehill. And now those pensions are strangling local government, state government, and eventually they'll swallow our national budget as well.
We have outrageous healthcare expenditures because we've ignored massive market dysfunction for years. How long have we heard about "pre-existing condition" clauses? And how many decades have politicians had to make them illegal? But we saw nothing, and now it's all of a sudden an emergency and the only solution is to hand more responsibility and money over to the people who didn't do their jobs in the first place. And while we're massively increasing demand for healthcare, can anyone point me to the detailed proposals to increase supply so we can control prices? Oh, that's right, there's practically nothing to deal with that issue.
The problem boils down to this - two prior generations of Americans have been greedy, thoughtless, and possessed of an extraordinary sense of entitlement. Instead of dealing with honest solutions like saving your own money for retirement, they took every easy route out possible. And here we sit. For my part, I think the government that governs least governs best, and I'd rather see our politicians do something useful like attempt to help markets function more effectively. The solution to every crisis is not to tell ourselves we "deserve more" all without somehow working for it or paying the tab. Instead it's devolved into picking between mercantilists and socialists, which is just repellant. Ugh.
Anyway, that's my rant. I'm sure someone will have something to say about that one . . .
Red_Vespa saidI've got the fanatical Republican moron southbeach1500 blocked, but replies to him by others bring these things to my attention. For the benefit of others here, but not for his closed mind:
- The massive deficit was created by the Bush Administration, who inherited a zero budget deficit from the previous Democratic Clinton Administration.
- The additional Obama deficit is entirely the result of cleaning up the Bush Mess: correcting the Bush Economic Meltdown, and resolving the twin wars Bush started.
- None of the Obama expenditures are at his initiation. These costs are all about trying to clean-up the disaster he inherited. Even the costs of health care reform are merely projected, not yet in place.
- It is typical Republican hypocrisy to have made the mess in the first place, then to criticize the costs to clean it up. Maybe better to have never made the mistakes in the first place? DUH! But that wouldn't make points with the fanatical Republican Base, like southbeach1500, whose only purpose in life is to criticize anything Democratic.
Meanwhile, a great many of us long for the return of people who cared first for the welfare of the entire United States, and less for their party affiliations. RJ members like longbeach1500 show us why that is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
