    [quote]
In an ominous case, a German biotech company engineered a common soil bacterium, Klebsiella planticola, to break down wood and plant wastes and produce ethanol. It passed all its safety tests -- until Michael Holmes, a graduate student at Oregon State University, decided to test it in living soil, and discovered that all the plants sprouted in that soil died. Worse, it persisted in the soil, as do other genetically modified bacteria. Had it been released for use, it might have spread and, according to geneticist David Suzuki, could conceivably have wiped out all plant life on the continent.

It no longer makes or sells aspartame, but Monsanto was the company that brought Nutrasweet and Equal to the world. I think we all know now that this has been an awful poison on the world. Monsanto fought hard in the years they made aspartame to keep stevia, a natural sweetener, off the market. Knowing how unsafe their own product was, they convinced (or bought off) the FDA that stevia was unsafe. And now that we finally do have stevia in mainstream groceries, what do we get? The chemically processed version of stevia called Truvia made by Cargill, a company not so unlike Monsanto.

Monsanto Wins Award for Worst Corporate Climate Lobbyist

    [QUOTE]

Monsanto emerged as the winner of the Angry Mermaid Award 2009 with 37 per cent of the ten thousand votes that were cast.

Oil giant Shell ended second place (18 per cent), for lobbying to sabotage effective action on climate change, followed by the American Petroleum Institute (14 per cent).

Agriculture giant Monsanto was nominated for promoting its genetically modified (GM) crops as a solution to climate change and pushing for its crops to be used as biofuels. The expansion of GM soy in Latin America is contributing to major deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS) of which Monsanto is a member, is helping to promote the company’s cause by allowing GM soy to be labelled as “responsible”. Monsanto also wants GM soy to be funded under the Clean Development Mechanism.

I saw Food Inc. and recommend it to everyone. It really makes you think about where your food comes from. Some of the things I've heard about the owning and control of seed genetics is nothing short of shocking. I think this is a very relevant thing to discuss here on RJ since it has to do with our health.

This is just one of the reasons why we work with Heifer International http://www.heifer.org. They support small local farms and natrual, organically grown food. They help pull people out of poverty by giving them animals and training to create an environmentally sustainable, income producing farm. My partner writes the local Portland blog for Heifer at http://portland.heiferblog.org.

Monsanto have their European research head quarters right by where my parents have their vacation home.... there are frequent protests around there.

I don't really see anything more negative or 'evil' about what they do than any large multinational corporation, I don't understand about the patenting of actual genes, I mean unless they create them from scratch...which is impossible so I think that's going to fall apart in the future....

I mean it's only held up in US court....and they don't often hold up in the rest of the world

Call to action: sign on to letter against GE alfalfa

The Organic Trade Association (OTA) has signed on to a letter to USDA with the National Organic Coalition and Center for Food Safety opposing the proposed deregulation of genetically engineered (GE) Roundup Ready alfalfa.

    http://www.nationalorganiccoalition.org/OrganicSignOnGEAlfalfainfo.pdf

The letter urges USDA to deny the commercial approval of GE alfalfa and “correct the egregious errors and faulty assumptions that underpin USA’s analysis of the impact of GE contamination on organic and non-GE crops and markets for any future GE permit requests.” The deadline to comment to USDA has been extended until March 3.

OTA encourages you to either sign on to the letter or cut and paste from it to submit a comment directly to USDA:

Background on the draft environmental impact statement is available online: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/newsroom/content/2010/02/alfalext.shtml

I'm not surprised by this....Monsanto has been doing this for years..so much so as to even prosecute farmers for even growing crops with seeds that are not genetically modified. My advice: go organic and make sure to keep the seeds from the fruits you harvest!

I saw food inc. and I was disgusted with this company. They have so much patents on their seeds and manipulate and boss around the farmers its so sad. I think we should have a farmer appreciation day after watching the movie.

Coming from someone who is second generation off the farm (with family still working) and who has friends in college who came off the farm, I second this quote.

No one knows the full extent of what happens to the end product when you splice in new genes. The only thing that is guaranteed is that it will create surprise side effects… Food related illnesses have DOUBLED since GMO’s flooded the market in the early 1990s.

GMO foods can be allergenic, toxic, carcinogenic and even anti-nutritional.
It may also create brand new diseases that we’ve never seen before, in addition to spurring on the disease rate of some we already have, such as cancer.

Research findings associated with GM foods include things like:

-GM peas caused lung damage in mice
-GM potatoes may cause cancer in rats
-Bacteria in your gut can take up DNA from GM food
-They may be spurring the creation of weed-killer-resistant superweeds

This stuff is dominating our food supply thanks to the evil giant Monsanto, strongly backed by the government. We were hoping Obama would change things as he promised GMO labeling on foods...but that's good old politics for you...

Yet another misguided, feel good crusade!

What do you know about farming?
    What do you know alfalfa?
What do you know about organic alfalfa?
What do you know about Monsanto's roundup ready alfalfa?
Do you know anything about how alfalfa is grown?
Do you have any idea of when to plant alfalfa?
How much water it takes to grow alfalfa?
When or how often alfalfa is cut?

Misguided, feel crusades like this led by people who see one documentry full of half truths and misinformation have real consequences and real affects on peoples livelyhoods! You have no idea of what you are doing or what your are talking about, but it must be right because it feels good to you, nevermind that there real people who will feel the effects of what you are doing. Maybe you should know what your doing instead of going off half cocked!
