Why no sit-ups?

    Hi, Most of you guys seem to say that one should do crunches but not sit-ups. Looking at your sixpacks, I am in no position to argue that! I do wonder why. Today and occasionally I do some sit-ups on a flat bench, my legs locked around the benchlegs, and I get a nice ab burn out of that, so it seems that it is doing some good.

    I do concentrate on the abs when I move upward and try not to use back muscles.

    This is why so many people do sit ups and them give up on there abs.

    Traditional sit-ups emphasize sitting up rather than merely pulling your sternum down to meet your pelvis. The psoas muscles run from the lower back to the front of the thighs. This muscle action is to pull the thighs closer to the torso.
    This action is the major component of sitting up. Because of this, when you are doing sit ups your psoas muscles are the primary muscles being engaged and not your abdominals.
    So, sit-ups are a pretty useless exercise if you want to get your abs in shape. Instead, use crunches, because they directly work your abs.
    Remember crunches only tone the ab muscles, you need a lowered calorie intake to burn off the fat, so the muscles then show through clearly.
    If you always "target" the muscle you want to develop you will see faster growth and change. Always make your workouts count.

    Joe's right...
    sit-ups employ the hip flexors
    which do absolutely nothing for ab developement
    do they work the abs at all?...yeah
    but you'll get a much bigger bang for your buck by doing crunches

    Thanks Guys, appreciate your replies. I mostly do crunches anyhow. Good explanation re the psoas muscle/him flexors.

    More protein than carbs. No junk food, no fried food, no pop, no alcohol. Stay away from any type of sweetener. As much greens and fruit as you can stand. Vitamins and Whey protein drinks after I workout. Boring isn't it. Oh well thats life as a bodybuilder.

    This topic is exactly what I have a question about! I am doing the Ultimate abs in 10 minutes (or less)from this site and want to know if you really can work on your abs every day? I have been told you can and I have been switching it up from the above workout circuit to regular situps and crunches on the off days. I am also getting ready to start the 12 Week Strong and Lean program from here and want to ask guys who know what they are doing about the every day ab question. I know this will not make me lose the belly but once I do, I want some nice abs to shine through!

    What is the major difference between sit ups and crunches? I always thought with crunches you just don't come all the way up just far enough to get ur back off the floor. Where as situps u came all the way up?

    you can work your abs every day because they're a different type of muscle fibre.

    Your abs are mostly slow-twitch

    All your muscles that maintain your posture like your lower/deeper back muscles and your abs are constantly flexing and holding tone all day to keep you from falling over, compared to like your bicep which you only use when you need it. The abs are built to constantly regenerate without a period of rest because of their constant workload, therefore you can work them out daily.

    JLK7JESTER, Sit-ups, together with leg-raises, were the common ab exercises up to maybe the 1970's. In a sit-up, you hook your feet under a chair or sofa or some piece of gym equipment and pull yourself into a sitting position with your abs. If you were lucky, a gym partner would hold your feet.
