Jason Chaffetz is the ranking Republican on the House committee that oversees the District of Columbia and has authority to veto any D.C. law within 30 days of its enactment — including the marriage equality ordinance, passed by the city council and signed by Mayor Adrian Fenty last week.

The article makes it sound like one man can block the law. That is not the case. Here's what the DC goverment website says about the Congressional Review:

During this 30-day period of congressional review, the Congress may enact into law a joint resolution disapproving the Council's Act. If, during the 30-day period, the President of the United States approves the joint resolution, the Council's Act is prevented from becoming law. If, however, upon the expiration of the 30-day congressional review period, no joint resolution disapproving the Council's Act has been approved by the President, the Bill finally becomes a Law and is assigned a law number.

So this guy may be able to get some press, make a name for himself with the social conservatives, but that's about it.
