I'm going to start weights in mid-January (getting 3 or 4 sessions with a trainer to make sure I'm using proper technique) and I'd like advice on a total body workout that can be done 3x/week, consisting mainly of multi-joint/compound movements, since I'm more interested in functional strength than packing on a ton of weight. If I did a workout consisting of:

    -squats
    -step ups or lunges
    -deadlifts
    -ab work
    -tricep dips
    -pullups

Will I be working most of the major muscle groups? Is there anything I'm hitting too hard? Too soft or missing completely? What are some of your favorite multi-joint movements?

    I appreciate it guys.

Note: I havent had coffee yet, thus the lack of true comment here. Now with that out of that way...

....I see lots for legs, but nothing for your chest. I'd add pushups into the equation. My advice would also be to ask the trainer you're paying for. They might come up with some suggestions too.

    Good luck!

Major compound lifts: Squat, Deadlift, Bench Press, Overhead Press. Make sure your routine include the last two. Also include the accessory lifts you mentioned, like dips, chinups/pullups. Since you are training for strength, you might want to consider a 5x5 program like Stronglifts which is fullbody done 3x a week.
