Are Gay news blogs too GAY?

I used to check out this gay "news" blog called Rod 2.0 or something. This site features some informative news stories in gay issues but every other day there would be a NSFW post with pics of young, hairless, shirtless (sometimes pants-less) men plastered all over the site. Sometimes it would just be announcing that a shirtless (non-gay) model or athlete was featured in a new magazine...but most times it was just screen-grabs from a tv show of young singers/models showing skin.

So I posted a comment on the site about how superficial this seems from a "News" site. Then I was instantly BLOCKED from posting ever again. One other person commented that it was good to get a break from the news with the "eye candy" as he put it.

Even as I type this, the main newest post on that site, after a post about a black gay writer who was stabbed to death, is this "Buffed and Shirtless Chad Ochocinco Tweets New Photos".

My question is: Does this reinforce the stereotype that gay men are over-sexed and promiscuous when a great deal of our prominent News Blogs feel the need to have "eye candy" breaks of muscled men in their underwear?

I don't see this done on The Huffington Post, Crooks & Liars, CNN.com, etc...

I think people are allowed to make their respective blogs as gay as they'd like. If you don't like it, why don't you make a different one that fits in with your expectations?

The site is called "Rod." What did you seriously expect? And what straight person is ever going to look that up?

While people are free to produce any blog they like, no matter how tawdry or foolish, based on what the OP is saying, this blog does seem to be reinforcing a negative social stereotype, as evidenced by the generally catty blog response of blocking him for daring to make a valid, critical point.

I don't see, however, a need for gay news sites, but that's my personal point of view. But then, I AM on a gay fitness forum. Go figure.

OP, why don't you start one that isn't sexualized? You could makes some $$ off of it.

ParkourPump saidI think the OPs point is, does gay media really have to be so hyper sexualized? Why not just report the news relevant to the gay community and leave off the shirtless/pantsless guys?

Or are gay men unwilling to read the news unless there are hot guys on the website?

Yeah this was EXACTLY the gist of my long-winded post...LOL

I just checked out that Rod 2.0 site and it's just another blog, by some guy that has an opinion. Since it is a blog, he is free to post about what ever he wants, including current news and pics of nude men. Bloggers are not journalists. Just remember that.

    EDIT:

Forgot to mention. This is the only gay blog worth reading, if you're into gay news/politics.

I like Rod 2.0 because it features articles about gay events that do not make it mainstream.

And the semi-nude guys are a nice bonus. It is nice to see hot men of color. I was one of those people that thinks it is nice to have a break from depressing news like the professor stabbed to death.

As for CNN, FoxNews, etc., they have segments on their shows that have nothing to do with news. It may not be a semi-nude guy, but it is something that is silly. Like a little person humping Al Roker's leg.

Gay men find the funniest shit to bitch about. Like xrichx said, bloggers aren't journalist.

Why not just get your news from somewhere else if you are so offended by *gasp* shirtless men? There are dozens of gay news blogs that are fit to take home to mother.

But, who gives a fuck if some homophobe thinks that the site stereotypes gay men who, by the way, really dig shirtless men. Because homophobes are assholes doesn't mean that we need to change our behavior so they think better of us. Fuck them. Fuck them to the bloody bowels of hell.

WoW! I just checked some of this. Are you sure these people are gay? If I didn't know better I would swear that this was a website for Christian Evangelicals

Is Perez Hilton considered a gay "news" blog? Because I really can't stand that guy. I really can't....

Have you seen what passes as "news" this last decade? icon_razz.gif

Oh my God don't get me started... I'll have a bitch flip over what passes as news today.

How does Spencer and Heidi breaking up get more attention than the passing of Norman Borlaug?

How does Jon and Kate's breakup have more on-air time than Walter Cronkite's death?

    Jesus Hetero Christ...
