The music I listen to means the world to me because it can put what I'm feeling into words. Does anyone else like the same music as me? I have my top ten bands posted on my profile... I feel like music is always an essential conversation piece. If two people like the same music, there is always something to talk about or sing along to in order to break the tension.

Nope, never heard of any of those bands.

Nobody I know listens to the music I like. They may listen to one or two bands, but for the most part were on different wave lengths.

Finding new songs and bands is a cool experience. I have found a bunch of new music from viewing people's profiles and reading forums. Not really a conversation starter for me though.

It's definitely a conversation piece for me, although my tastes are pretty off the wall. One of the great parts of meeting new people is discovering their musical tastes and learning about new music.

Music is absolutely key to my life. I associate events in my life to whatever music I was listening to at the time, and it's usually my go-to medicine whenever something's bugging me.

As far as top bands/artists go... that's a hard one. I have bands that come and go into my life, so my top 10 is always changing. Here's the list as it stands:

    1. Nirvana
    2. The Thermals
    3. Mudhoney
    4. Madonna
    5. The Pixies
    6. The Faint
    7. Dinosaur Jr.
    8. Yeah Yeah Yeah's
    9. Red Hot Chili Peppers
    10. Lady Gaga

Nirvana will always be my favorite band. They're my go-to when the world seems to be bearing down on me.

The Thermals are amazing. It's like they took the essence of Nirvana and stripped it down even more to pure pop punk joy, with lyrics that pack a punch, and wrapped it all into three minute explosions of noise.

Nirvana and the Thermals would not exist if it wasn't for Mudhoney, though, so respect is always due here. Mark Arm's voice fits the 'grunge' sound better than Cobain could ever hope, and Dan Peters even drummed for his band for a short time.

Madonna is also another artist I go to when things are going to crap and I just need to get up and move. My DJ friend once told me that the first thing he learned was that if people weren't dancing, putting on Madonna would fix that. Everywhere I've been, even the straight bars, this seems to hold true.

    The Pixies created Nevermind.

The Faint are a absolutely FANTASTIC band from Omaha, Nebraska. Post punk dance pop insanity, with lyrics you'd never think to dance to. Next to Bright Eyes they're part of the shining beacon that tells us here in the Husker state that, yes... you can escape.

Diniosaur Jr. Is possibly the best live act I've ever seen. Pure perfection of the 'wall of sound' technique, what with J Mascis' 3 Marshall stacks cranked to 10 in the smallest of clubs. Who needs to hear anyway?

Karen O and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's come from the same New York art scene that Stefani Germanotta broke her teeth on, including the avant guard fashion scene. Along with the White Stripes and the Strokes, they brought back the garage rock sound. Probably my second favorite live show as well. Karen O just has an insane amount of energy, while Brian Chase makes complicated drum beats look stupidly easy.

RHCP... nothing really needs to be said here. This band isn't particularly meaningful to me, other than their music has always been there. I'm sure it'd feel odd if it wasn't.

Lady Gaga. What an intelligent, fascinating, well spoken pop artist. She's really won me over with The Fame Monster, namely the tracks "Dance in the Dark", "Teeth", and "Speechless", not to mention her amazing life performances. This is what mainstream pop should be, and I applaud her for having the vision and determination to take her act where she wants. Oh, and she's also one of our community's biggest supporters.

Music is extremely important, but, I am older than most people on here ( I was 22 at Woodstock in 1969) so I have never heard of 95% of those groups.

The second half of your sentence is not correct.

The reason you haven't heard of 95% of those groups is because you don't listen to new music. It's not because of your age. Food for thought.

Actually I don't like most of the new music, especially hip hop and rap. There are several new groups that I like, but would rather listen to Sandy Bull or other jazz music.

Though I listen to a wide variety of music I don't tend to follow most pop trends, and am generally into more esoteric bands. If someone I'm with hasn't heard of some of them, I usually feel like it will be hard to mesh aesthetically - but then if they're open to being turned onto new things, anything's possible. Some artists I like:

Eric Satie, Wendy Carlos, The Orb, Aphex Twin, The Residents, Gorillaz, Adult., Tangerine Dream, Ligetti, Scarlatti, Hardfloor, Beatles, Kraftwerk, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, Can, Coil, Steve Reich, Air Liquide, Cocteau Twins, Grace Jones, King Crimson, Plastikman, Charles Cohen (my personal hero and friend)

These days I don't listen to much music casually anymore - usually too busy working on my own material and appreciate a clear mind when I'm not. I'm open to many things, but equally unimpressed by most. Love dance music, but yawn at what most "gay DJs" play. Too predictable.

All my ex's had a lot of overlapping aesthetic tastes - and often appreciated much of what we turned each other onto.

Well here's one for you all to listen to:

Nick Drake is astoundingly good. I listen to this album, sip a glass of wine, and look out my wall-o-window at the view of Downtown Austin when I really, really need to unwind.

I love Nick Drake - beautiful stuff... and sometimes bitterly somber. An awesome combo. Early Joni Mitchell does that to me as well.

You should check out some jazzy hip hop, like DJ Vadim or other acts off Ninja Tune records. In addition, Us3 made a record called "Hand on the Torch," which sampled off of Blue Note Records pretty exclusively. Other greats are A Tribe Called Quest and Digable Planets....

Lyrics Born, The Roots and other acts out there are hip hop groups that aren;t promoted heavily cause their positive messages don't sell well.

Remember....hip hop still uses rock, jazz and funk beats....so if you like those genres you'd probably like some rap. Also, downtempo acts such as Thievery Corporation, Beats Antique, Gotan Project, Bluetech and many more are great underground music with live instrumentation and hip hop beats.

    ENJOY!

Listening to music is okay, but nothing beats playing an instrument.

Even though my main focus as a muscian was pretty much classical.I pretty much love everything from nancy ajram to the dixie chicks.

Not my type of music, but as with other posters, music is what makes me tick you know, either classical or contemporay. It moves my soul and spirit. It speaks to me and when I play music it speaks through me and I through it.

I cant say that i do agree with your whole top 10, but i am with you when you say you love music. depending on my mood, it will decide what kind of music i will listen to at that time. But i would have to say that neo-soul and R&B are my 2 most favorite genres, followed by Jazz/Blues. I try to find artist that i havent heard of and see if i can feel what song has to offer. I am in love with sappy love songs. I catch myself sometimes when i listen to music. I get lost in the lyrics, the beats, and the harmony. I try to leave reality and enter the perfect world of love, when listening to these songs.

I cant knew a few songs, but i can name a few artist that always have been beneficial to me:

    India Arie
    Dionne Bromfield
    Amy Winehouse
    Erykah Badu
    Anthony Hamilton
    Otis Redding
    Keyshia Cole
    Aaliyah
    Adele
    Boys 2 Men
    Etta James
    Ella Fitzgerald
    MANY MANY MANY MORE.....

(p.s. i dare all who read this to try and really feel and get lost in theyre song the next im they listen to it. you will find out how much more you will appreciate that song)
