Inner Chest Muscle Pulled?

I began doing tricep dips (w/o assistance) -- 100 tricep dips. But, afterwards, I felt pain in my inner chest. I think that I pulled a muscle there. It only hurts when I do dips or closed-hand pushups.

Any recommendations on how to treat it? Should I avoid doing chest exercises altogether or just the ones that involve the innter chest muscles?

    Thanks!

Besides rest, you should really have someone in Injury treatment check it out. That person would take into account how you perform the act(s) that cause pain, the location of your arms when you feel the pain in your chest and a few other factors; hopefully it's just your pec minor.

Since you're in Chicago, I can send you the number of a really great Massage Therapist that can help you assess what steps you should take to heal fast. But until you get a PT, doctor, or other Injury Treatment Professional to take a look at it, rest a bit.

Just fyi, chest muscles are like rubber bands stretched horizontally across your chest. There is no "inner" chest muscle, so you can't target away from that area.

    Nice illustration. NASM perhaps? :-)

You probably have a minor pull / tear. Microtears happen all the time in weight training.

If you are doing 100 reps, I'm surprised you have the kind of thing you're talking about.

I'd rest it a few days; put some ice on it to kick down any inflammation; take a NSAID (ibuprofen works best for me), and in a few days, to some high rep work to pump some blood in there and help it heal / wash away toxins.

I wouldn't worry about it to much, unless it becomes chronic, at which point you need to look at form, function, and so on.

Thanks for the responses. It was actually my first time doing the dips.

I'll make sure to apply ice and rest. icon_biggrin.gif
