Straight Couple Sues Cruise Line for Being Put on Gay Cruise

    October 16 2008
When a heterosexual Italian couple booked their cruise vacation, they were not notified that they would be setting sail with a crowd of 1,500 gay men on Italy's first gay cruise.
According to an October 16th report by the Daily Mail, the Italian couple arrived at port to find news crews surrounding the cruise vessel. At first, the couple thought someone famous was onboard—but they soon realized the media was in a frenzy to capture Italy's first all-homosexual cruise.

Even more surprising was the couple's embarrassment when they spotted acquaintances that they had not known were gay onboard the ship.

After witnessing three days of gay-centric parties and activities while the ship sailed from a port near Rome, Italy to Barcelona, Spain and back again, the couple is suing the cruise line for reimbursement of their fare: around $4,500.

The couple, who has not been named, denies that their actions are homophobic. Their lawyer, Antonio Francesconi, told the Daily Mail that the lawsuit "is not a question of discrimination but one of lost satisfaction because no-one had told them their holiday was at the same time as the gay cruise."

Francesconi also said that "[his] clients were also left embarrassed because among the passengers were people they knew and had no idea that were gay, which was uncomfortable for all parties…."

That's funny. Reminds me of being on an Atlantis gay beach resort during an afternoon tea dance by the pool and watching a cute family of tourists come strolling in off the beach, presumably because it sounded like fun and the pool was beautiful. Took them about 5 minutes to realize what they stumbled upon before the dad grabbed both kids by the hands and practically ran away.

BUT. That couple should win their case. If they truly weren't told they were going to be on a gay cruise, it's not fair.

I think the guy is closeted and knew about the gay cruise all along. His wife is doing this because she caught him checking out the crew.

Poor couple, they should be compensated. Would hate to be on a cruise with only straight couples.

I don't. If they wanted their money back, they should have asked for it when they found out it was a gay cruse - before going on the cruise. Now they're juts trying to have their cake and eat it, too.

    ROTFL. Right on!

(Is there a statute of limitations? Because this one time, back when I was 10....)

They already packed for vacation and showed up at the port. Guess they figured they'd try it anyway. Would have probably done the same.

Guess the cruise line figured they should pay for it.

And you'd have had a blast!
    Even if you weren't gay.
And you wouldn't ask for a refund.

They do have a legitimate claim though. Imagine how you'd feel if you were put on an all-lesbian cruise. I'd be sea sick before the ship started sailing.

A nightmare at best. This is so funny yet traumatizing at the same time. They should be refunded.

    Ha ha.
Boo Hoo...we found out our friends are gay.

Offer them a coupon for their next voyage...then book them on a swingers' cruise.

ya total fubar by the cruise line for not informing their customers about every detail about the cruise.. I'm sure I'd sue if I didn't get my chocolate mint on my pillow or they served cheese cake at a buffey.. I mean really.. what would they think. Course I guess That deems a total refund right.. oh wait.. I still ate, and the lobster was great.. oh and the waiters were just fabulous and that jet ski ride with the captain.. was divine.

I don't think they should win one dime.. after all they knew before they got on board what they were getting into.. if they wanted a refund I would have screamed it right then... asked about rebooking or what other options there were. And even if I ultimatly decided I had scheduled this time off fo work with the whole family traveled a couple hundred miles to get to that port. If I wasn't going to cancel it. Then well I would let the cruise line know I would never book with them again and maybe just maybe get a discount on the next trip if I decided to go on another one. After all I look at it this way.. Do I assume that the next cruise ( being my first cruise mind you) would that be a umm straight cruise.. with only hetros.. or would it be homos.. or would I be looking into... So salesman.. umm what will I be doing when I'm there.. whats going on onboard that I can do.. and events.. activities... or am I gonna sit on deck and sun bath for 7 days and 7 nights? I better pack some sunscreen.

Yes... gay cruises are, well, unique. They should have been told. They didn't get what they paid for. What if you booked an expensive week on a cruise and they didn't tell you that it was a Disney cruise with 2,000 kids under the age of 10 and stuffed animals walking around everywhere?

Because going on a vacation designed for a special group, where all the activities are centered around that groups needs, is different from a normal vacation. How many drag shows and gay parties does a straight couple really need to attend?

ditto. If they hadnt known before they left port, I could see their point. But there were fucking news crews there,

It is funny though, complaining about a cruise filled with sexy Italian men. One man's trash is another man's treasure icon_smile.gif

Are you serious? There is nothing wrong w/ being gay but, they should have been given a choice. This is a couple who pay'd a few thousand dollars to get away frm the bump and grind of there daily life. Now set to sail away w/ a boat full of men who happen to be gay. Same said if it was two men who happen to be gay only to find out it's a lesbian cruise. That is not the vacation they sought and should be fully compensated. I'm happy there not money grubbing buffoons and asking for millions for pain and suffering.

I've been part of the few gay couples on straight cruises and survived to tell the story, but that's because gay people, like all minorities, must be more adaptable and flexible. As Wanda Sykes mother would say to her: "Stop that! White people are watching you." Straight people expect the world to reflect them and have no perspective on their own behavior or privelige.
    .

But really, how could this have happened? People who sign up for cruises investigate and select for the boats, intineraries, tours and entertainment that they want to experience. Who buys a vacation blind? And if this was indeed the first gay cruise in Italy and it attracted press at embarkation, how could the agents not know and the marketing not disclose the fact? I'm not buying their supposed "innocence."

    OK, you win. (:

Except that I wouldn't have gotten on that ship in the first place.

I like hanging out with sporty, jocky dykes. They're a lot of fun.
