I am ging to be having Inguinal Hernia surgery soon and also have had my nipples pierced in the past 3 weeks. I know that body jewelry needs to be removed before surgeries due to metal interference, but can the piercings be replaced with acrylic/plastic jewelry and covered with bandaids? I dont want to removed them as I could end up with infection or have to wait awhile and have to repierce them
Has anyone had to experience this dilemma????? I havent asked the surgeon yet about what my options are. icon_mad.gif

Asking the surgeon what your options are would be the best bet.

You might have to take them out.

I had to go into hospital to have surgery on my armpits and the nurse made me take out my nipple ring (which I had had for about 7 years) and my ear cartilage ring (which I had had for about the same amount of time). But I asked another nurse who told me that that shouldn't have mattered and just wrapping them up in tape would have been fine. I would just ask the doctor a few days before hand.

I honestly don't know, but I would be more worried about the surgery iyself than the piercings!

Yes, metal can interfere if the surgeon is using a elctrocautery tool (bovie), most do. If you have metal in your body, you can get burns around it. you should be ok with acrylic. I have used them in the past when having a procedure done.
