I recently signed on with a rugby team and have been looking around for weight training tips. I was more interested in drills that not only improves the player's build and muscle mass, but also make him a better athlete overall.

I saw some videos on YouTube of football players in the US training with huge tires and hammers etc., as opposed to regular gym stuff. The videos are below. You'll see what I mean.

Has anyone on this forum here tried anything like these? Do they really help improve your game? If you did, where were you training, because most regular gyms don't seem to have these?

I would ask around one of your local rugby clubs and ask them if you could get a copy of any training programs they have for their players. Or, try and search some websites specifically on rugby and you might find something.

Failing that, you might want to get a personal trainer who specializes in sport-specific conditioning. I got one and he's come up with some great programs for me, and many of them now involve doing sessions outside (including pulling tyres and stuff like that).

    Good luck!
