When did young gay men get so fat? I was out over the weekend in various bars in London's West End and a lot of the younger guys in their 20s were way overweight. Is it all the alcohol they drink or the lack of exercise. I was skinny as a rake when I was in my 20s.

Someone once told me that all gay men are either fat as hell or skinny as a bitch,

I don't believe it (especially after being on RJ).... but you know

    It happens sometimes

Interesting - I was just talking to a friend about this. Not all of them are fat, but it does seem like more of them are overweight. Maybe more young guys are realizing it's ok to be gay and so we're seeing a bigger cross section of physical types.
My sons are both overweight although they were little jocks when younger, but with X box, computer shit et al they got really sedentary and fattened up. Maybe it's a generational thing because only one of mine (I suspect) may be gay.
But there are plenty, puh-lenty of very hot great looking trim and built young'uns here on Realjock.....

Also I was so skinny growing up I wouldn't even wear short sleeves ( NO biceps) till I was 22 icon_lol.gif

I am not for sure how limited this is to the gays. Go walk around any college campus (mine, at least) and be amazed at the large numbers of young obese people.

1and3Chairs saidI think its the alcohol and poor food available on college campuses. Its little better than fast food. When I lived in a dorm I existed on salad and canned fruit because sometimes those were the only veg. options that were not cheese pizza or french fries.

Those types of food are available 24/7 to these kids, away for the first time. My first room mate ate cheeseburgers and potato chips everyday.

I agree. Panda Express, Starbucks, and Pizza Hut are popping up at college campuses everywhere! Grr to the fast food nation!!!

Was McDonalds, Coke and all the other fast food as popular when you were 20?

Nowadays you have to try hard to find something healthy in normal stores. So, if they're just eating what's easy to find, they're gonna get a lot heavier.

So why should young gay men be any different than the rest of the population?...at least in the USA obesity among the general population has reached an epedimic stage.

I kind of agree with the sentiment. You got a dose of whats happening everywhere. Fewer and fewer people seem tuned in with exercise and proper nutrition.. or just don't care.

I'm pretty sure London's West End is in Britain, though, and not on a college campus in the US.

The bigger question to me, though, is why do you care? Are they having the audacity to limit the number of people you'll deign to fuck or were you just having a bitchy moment when you started the thread?

Hey there are over weight people everywhere but i really notice it in the states. I think it's because of the cheap food policy. I couldn't believe the sizes and kinds of snacks that were available.... and then those grazing places. I'd really have to watch myself or i'd gain 50lbs in no time. lol... It would be a true test to my will power..... and then there is excercise.... everyone drives everywhere and i never see kids out on bikes. It's a whole different culture thank goodness you're finally going to get healthcare.

Well there is the bear community, which is very accepting of overweight guys. Around here, a website for bears is extremely popular.

The gay bars that I go to, there aren't too many overweight guys. But I think they have their own bars and events. If you check out the local gay bowling league, for example, the heavy set group far outnumbers the thin, or physically fit.

    haha, yeah,
I don't know many gay people at my college, but an incredible amount of kids at my college are athletic.

I think there are a lot of theories, some related to perceived acceptance of homosexuality and some related to cultural mores and the obesity epidemic. For me, it's more important that instead of targeting one group and saying "as compared to x years ago you appear to be fatter as a group" we need to focus on changing the climate for all people. As a group we RJers have chosen to live healthier lifestyles, it should be our goal to help one other person see the benefits of a healthier life each year, month, week, day (whichever amount of time works best for you). Instead of admonishing people for being obese and potentially giving them more harmful complexes as they grow older, we should be trying to encourage health and helping them, acting as mentors that we all may have had.

At least, that's two cents from this 20 year old...icon_cool.gif

A reflection of our society in general and I don't think limited to just gays. What's interesting however is that when I go to the Castro in SF, the number of overweight guys (old and young) is very limited, outside of that area (especially in the burbs) it's very high. The peer pressure of gays on each other is probably saving many of their lives or at least health.

Yep I did that at a college here in Northern Cali saw a Rocky Horror Show with play in front of it. About 300 kids in various stages of undress. First time I wanted to put clothes on them. Un-worked muffin and double muffin tops are pretty much the norm.

Sad to think that is the best shape and best health they will be in their lives.

When I was a teenager too far back for guys like MOM to count. Yes when creepy old guys got their start we considered over the hill guys to be upper 60's and 70's.

Now they start in their late 30 and early 40. No matter what you attribute the reasons to it is Not pretty.

Yes it is the shock wave headed around the World. icon_rolleyes.gif

I was a fat boy in my late 20's... getting there was one of the funnest things I've ever done! Maintaining where I am now is one the most gratifying things I've ever done.

I was overweight too when I was younger I wouldn't say it was fun but I agree with you that maintaining now is very difficult. I look at my roomate who doesnt eat healthy, sits on the couch all day, and still has a six pack even though he drinks alcohol all the time and it makes me wonder why everyone assumes all overweight people are lazy. I think kids need to see see the effects that being overweight can have on your future, working in the hospital I learned fast. And I agree with everyone that said about fast food being so cheap. I family of five can eat at McDonalds for under 20 bucks and to cook a healthy meal you are looking at a lot more than that. I'm not excusing it but there are many factors that can be contributed to the obesity pandemic.
