Can I be a gay man and not subscribe to the idea of extreme liberalism at the same time?

I'm proud to be attracted to other men, but even with that, I am not a huge fan of the liberal party. What do I do about that?

Well of course. People get to pick and choose their politics, and decide what's ingrained. Sexuality you cannot.

The one thing I can't understand is a racist gay man, or a bigoted gay man. They are self-loathing creatures.

When one inhabits a condition of minority they should be able to look emphatically to another who inhabits that very same condition. If one feels love they understand the condition's detriments, and if one reconciles some type of other-loathe they are awful creatures.

I'm with Malefeet. No, it's not possible. We'll be shipping the extreme Liberal Manifesto to yoru house and expect you to recite it every evening at 6:03pm (a queer time) for exactly 58 1/2 minutes and next week, your Abercrombie coupons should arrive along with your personal dresser.

    gay---bi----straight
    masculine---------androgynous--------feminine
    left----center-----right
fiscally or sociall or generall conservative---------liberal
    independent thinker-----------complete sheep

These things are all spectrums and all cover different dimensions and you can pick whatever position or ranges you want. Why are you asking for permission to be yourself? Sure, they might be clustered sometimes so you'll find a large proportion of gay identified males saying they're "extremely liberal". So what? If you're not, you're not.

But to support the other point made above, if you become a socially conservative (i.e. "kill all the faggots") type but are still having sex with men, be prepared to be outed and vilified (rightly) for your hypocrisy. That doesn't mean you can't do it. We certainly have had our share of gay politicians side with the church in the past year and try to ban gay marriage so it does happen.

Being gay doesn't mean you lose your right to free thinking and your own unique take on the world at large. Just be yourself, and don't apologize for opinions you might have that may not exactly fit in sync with what some may consider the gay mainstream. Just like in the straight world, gay people have mindsets that run the gamut from A-to-Z, and that's okay. It's called "Individuality" and it's what makes the world go round. How boring if we all thought the same.

There is no liberal party in the US. There are liberals, most of whom identify with the Democratic Party.

Despite my reputation here as a liberal, actually I call myself a pragmatist, and consider each political situation as I find it. There are 3 guiding principles I apply, that date back to the US colonial era, as American as anything we have in our history: what works, what's fair, and common sense.

Increasingly, today's US right-wing has become radicalized beyond all fairness and common sense, which in turn means I find little with which I can agree within the Republican Party. Hence most of my views coincide with liberal and Democratic Party ones. But not all of their views coincide with mine, and I don't endorse everything they do.

Added to that are my personal interests, which every US citizen is entitled to express, and as a gay man the US right-wing is my mortal enemy. Even when pragmatism might ally me with some specific Republican position, this is the Party that wants to criminalize me, to deny me my civil rights, to banish me from US society.

There comes a point when pragmatism turns into collaboration, when you begin to accept the argument that "Hitler was bad, BUT he built the Autobahns." There can be no "buts" with evil, no compromises, no allowances, no excuses, no accommodations.

As the US right-wing turns increasingly to hatred & evil, my innate pragmatism must on moral grounds deny Republicans any consideration. There are no bargains with evil that do not end in personal corruption & ethical destruction. Many politicians have tried it, and all have lost.

Therefore, my friend, do not embrace all that is liberal, as I do not. But neither give yourself over to those who hate you and would destroy you. Be your own gay man, and bestow your political favors upon those who favor you. You won't find many Republicans among them, I assure you, but make the Democrats work for your vote, which too many take for granted. To reverse-paraphrase Teddy Roosevelt, Liberals speak loudly but carry a small stick.

Spoken from a man who clearly doesn't know many Republicans personally and who insists on grouping them all in the same far right lunatic mold...which simply shows ignorance.

Thank you! I agree! I'm not really a big fan of either. The conservatives go way overboard with banning gay marriage and abortion, and the liberals like to have women's rights and how we are destroying the environment. Shit, do they have their priorities wrong.

No. We know where you are and we're coming for you. You will be taken to an undisclosed location. Arriana Huffington will read aloud from the Huffington Post until you recant your evil ways. Keith Olbermann will be your probation officer.

You know neither me nor my history. As a child in the 1950s I distributed my own parents' Republican election literature (prolly illegal today), both of them elected officials. Later I took my father's Republican county seat when he retired.

I grew up among Republicans, know them still (my partner's sister for one). And increasingly some have indeed become lunatics, or else they refuse to renounce those who are, continuing to support them with their money & votes.

I'm sorry, but if you won't vote against lunatics, but for them, then what does that make you? You can't have it both ways.

"I'm a nice, reasonable person in my private life, but I vote for lunatics."

    Is this your formula?

    The more compelling question is:

"How can I be a member of an overly-stereotyped minority and lack the ability to not be guilty of exactly the same broad over-generalizing and uninformed stereotyping that I experience at the hands of others?"

Uh, Red Vespa doesn't have to group Republicans all in the same far right lunatic mold. You all do it for yourselves by identifying and voting for all the far right lunatics that make up todays Republican party. Ignorance is bliss, ain't it, CuriousJockAZ?

More generalizing. Not ALL Republicans are alike and I certainly don't ALWAYS vote Republican, nor do I agree with ALL Republican platforms. That's why I prefer to remain independent. Frankly, both parties suck.
