It's not a big deal, but I guess I missed the announcement that RJ's "Supporter" category was discontinued in September. Recall, it allowed you to subscribe for a small fee and get some enhanced features. The best feature was being able to turn off the advertisements.

Chris from RJ told me that RJ will be completely free now, but that the Advertisements will reappear for all of us, once our subscription runs out (so, if you were signed up for a year back in September, the ads will reappear in September 2010.

Well, at least I got a shirt out of it.

Oh nice. I missed this announcement too.

Also noticed that there's now an option to either view a thread in its entirety or with pages like in more conventional forums (frankly I prefer the former). icon_smile.gif

Well, damn, I missed that change, too. I prefer the paid Supporter bennies, like not having the advertisements. I must presume the unrestricted advertisements are more lucrative to the site owners than having some paid Supporters.

But I HATED those ads, my main reason for buying a membership. I'll have to reevaluate my RJ membership once my current term ends. icon_sad.gif

If you are using firefox, google for the Adblock add-ons. They block most ads from other sites as well.

RJ's ads are not exactly that annoying though, in fact at times they're downright hilarious (straight dating ads for example). They're small and not really even that noticeable. Unlike some sites where mousing over an ad would make them pop up and cover the entire page annoyingly (Yahoo's for example).

I'm using Safari, which neatly integrates web browsing history from my Mac computer to my iPhone. But Safari fails to squelch those annoying mouse-over ads that suddenly block what I'm reading.

Well, I'll withhold judgment until my Supporter term expires, and I see what the situation is. But I did NOT like my previous free membership experience.

I have a feeling that advertising dollars were going to be a more significant source of funds to pay bills for RJ than the few dollars they got from Supporters.

I only found about this by going into my account information to check on my credit card number, and noticed there is nothing there but my email address, and no option to discontinue Supporter status. So I sent RJ an email.

Actually, it doesn't bother me much, one way or the other. I'll just mentally "white out" the ads.

This. I use the adblock with firefox and I have never seen an ad on this site.

It felt good contributing towards the site and the ad on/off feature was an added bonus

The ads last spring for gay travel in montreal were awesome. You missed out if you didn't see them!

You're right, they're not intrusive at all, except for the ONE that bothers me somewhat, and that is the ad for guys who are interested in meeting people with money. "Elite" I think it is called. That bothers me. It is unseemly. I want real guys, not gold diggers sniffing around for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
