I've known for years that I have an extremely addictive personality. First noticed it with sugar, then with alcohol, thank god I never picked up a cigarette. The only solution I've found is to cut all of it completely from my life. Obviously you can't completely cut out sugar because its in fruit ect. but for the most part all processed sugar. If I eat something sweet my body physically craves more and more. Even with exercise, I either go 2+ hours a day 7 days a week or not at all. It would be nice to find a happy medium.

Does anyone else have this problem or find a way to break these habbits? Is it a genetic thing?

"Addictive personality" has a lot to do with your brain chemistry. You're smart to realize that this could be an issue for you. The cliff's notes version is that everyone has pleasure receptors in your brain which release a feel good hormone called dopamine after receiving a certain stimulus. If your brain's firing correctly it releases dopamine throughout the day. If it's not, all the dopamine comes pouring out which leads to a "high" and ultimately a crash which leads to the phenomenon of craving. Your brain needs that pleasurable stimulus in order to release more dopamine so you can feel good, or even just normal in some cases. There are a number of theories out there about it, some suggest it may be genetic, others aren't sure.

You're smart to realize this early. I say pick your battles...avoid alcohol, drugs, and cigs. Everything else is negotiable, but you probably are at a higher risk for alcoholism and drug addiction than the average person who can take or leave substances.

You've got company!, I'm in the same boat.....it is a life-long fight and I either got it genetically or learned the habits from my parents and grandparents, etc...use care, it can run your life and it can ruin your life....be VERY aware and put your "system" in place to protect yourself from the "cravings", they can be almost overpowering...icon_eek.gif
