In many ways the people now rushing to Haiti, should hang their heads in shame.

Now the celebs have written a song. Now the Clinton's have arrived. Seriously where was all this concern before the Quake?

How about concern for poor countries before they get trashed by disaster. Now Mick Jagger where were you when Aristide was cutting off heads, and kids where running around with worms hanging out of their rectums from lack of fresh water.

I belive charity starts at home, Yet I still sent money every month now for 12 years to community Aide abroad, I also sent money every month to help and protect animals from the cruelty of mankind.

Oh I forgot, it's nothing I do it, because I'm white and privileged, justification by people who do nothing but for themselves, yet will stand by do nothing yet demand someone should do something, yet do nothing.

You need to get your facts straight. Former President Clintton has been the Ambassador of Haiti since leaving office. It would be shameful if we weren't rushing to Haiti if the midst of the tragic event! Good Lord man.

i completely agree with him actually. All these ppl just want to help because if they dont they will look bad basically.

if they had donated all these millions of dollars before the quaks, more ppl would have survived. they would have had better building, better roads, better everything.

what he's accomplishing is proving a point.

call me an "isolationist" (or worse), but i believe that there are all too many people within the United States of America who are suffering that should be "helped" before people of other countries who do not pay a penny in taxes here in America are "taken care of".

Oh please. So because this country can't afford to make every other nation in the world safe from hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanos, and whatever other disaster may strike, then we shouldn't even bother to assist when something happens? Hindsight is always 20/20 isn't it?

There are poor people everywhere. We're just trying to prevent their decimation at this point. A lot of us give to charities. Don't curse people for helping. It's no reason for anyone to hang his or her head in shame. We could all stand a lot more humility in our lives.

Not flaming, but the rest of the world expects the "last superpower" to step up. We've set a precendent over the past several decades of offering humanitarian assistance in the wake of natural disasters (Katrina not withstanding). As human beings, we can't just sit by as an extremely underprivileged and resource-poor country is decimated. Maybe it's also a "hearts and minds" kind of thing, but regardless, there is no excuse for the industrialized world (including Australia) not to offer assistance to Haiti.

What is tragic, here, is that Haiti's leaders haven't stepped up to help coordinate relief efforts. No one knows who's in charge. I don't necessarily think it's the USA's place to fill this void, but a lack of leadership has clearly led to a bungling of relief efforts.

My first reaction is to join the general consensus here. I understand your frustration for sure, but I must say its a very narrow look, and my guess a your frustrated comment is based on little information.

It does remind of of something my father often said, "You cant be all things to all people". And btw.. he was kind and very chartable.

Im the first to admit when I dont have enough information to give an opinion. This is one of those times. I will admit I dont know all the answers. I do know we have greatly helped this country for years, and many of those thanks go TO the Clintons, as well as many others.

Sometimes Im ashamed of who we are as a society or a country, but this is definately not one of them. Be frustrated, but be proud.

Y'know, when you're at the zoo and the monkey is flinging his poop at you, you probably avoid the monkey exhibit. This is a little like that where you kind of look at the monkey with a resigned grimace because he's not smart enough to fling his poop at zoo visitors and instead just rolls around in his own poop. That patticakes. He's RJ's inhouse rolls-around-in-his-own-shit monkey.

first off people are not only helping out because they think it will make them look good but because it's what people do, we are supposed to help each other. u say that there was no concern for haiti before thats bull cuz there are many organizations designed to help countries which are less fortunate. America (and other 1st world countries) are not obligated to aid countries that plagued with famine, dirty water, etc... but wealthier countries do what they can, considering that wealthy countries have to support their own people/citizens i say that any help that is given to the less fortunate should be appreciated and looked as a kind compassionate human gesture. Why are u condemner celebs for getting involved, people are constantly over analyzing celebs when they donate their time or money, it's bull shit. Earth quakes are unpredictable thats why knowing when they will hit is a bit of challenge, and i would like u to know that their are good people in this world, my friend (along with his church) went to haiti pre earth quake to help build h omes for people there. my friend was in haiti when the earth quake hit. After not eating for days when american aid offered him food my friend gave his portion to haitian children . So you need to eradicate the idea that people are only helping to make themselves look good, if u cant realize that this CRISIS is a lot more than celebs making it into magazines ur a dumb ass... thats just plain in simple.

This seems a little utopian and unrealistic. Haiti suffers from a corrupt government more than anything. You mentioned roads and buildings, who builds the roads and sets building codes - the government.

If generous people from around the world were all prophets and had known years earlier that Haiti would suffer from a giant earthquake and consequently donated millions of dollars what would have happened?

First, I really doubt millions of dollars would have impacted Haiti's building codes, which were responsible for the greatest number of deaths.

Second, new building codes wouldn't have required the entire bulldozing of a nation. Older buildings, like in the modern world, would have remained. Thus the hazard would have remained. (For example, their national palace is in ruins.)

Third, chances are that if the world had poured money into Haiti before the quake it would have been lost to corruption. It would be ridiculous to not assume that at least a sizable amount of the money never would have made it to the people. At least now we have responsible agencies like the UN and Red Cross doing the necessary work.

The world can not enforce its will on countries like Haiti. The people of such countries must demand good, stable and fair governments. The money we give to those countries now is much in need, but rarely is it transformative. We can provide clean drinking water, safe food, and maybe education. However, we can not topple their government and make the real, necessary changes needed to bring them out of poverty.

It is events like this earthquake that sometimes shake nations into action. Maybe this event will lead Haiti to form a more complex and accountable government. It does not really take a nation long to change. Just look at Taiwan, South Africa and South Korea. Things can get better in Haiti, but don't be delusional or naive in thinking that America or the world can simply will change or buy it into existence.

I'm happy to see people like Bill Clinton (who has been involved in Haiti for years), George Bush, Colin Powell (who has also been involved in Haiti for years), and even celebrities (who can raise awareness among people who don't know/care where Haiti is) involved in the aftermath. These people, along with CNN, BBC, media, will bring more awareness to this issue than anyone in this thread.

I just hope that this event proves to be transformative for Haiti. This might be the chance Haiti needed to pull together, reform and change their nation for the better.

Clearly you are no political expert....

Did you expect the US to just force their way into Haiti and start giving out aide when the Gov't didn't ask for it? That would literally create a war.

The US gave approx $3 BILLION over the past 10-15 years. If the gov't of a country doesn't want the help, there is nothing we can do.

How would you like it if China came to our country and just started taking over and doing their own shit? Not gonna happen.

    Get your facts straight.

This is how I feel as well. We, as a country, need to get rid of poverty here and fix our own country before we help others. I mean we really have no obligation to help them at all but we do. they should be happy for anything that we do.
