I LOVED tending bar (except for the smoke - which may not be an issue anymore) but I didn't go to school for it. I just learned on the job. The thing about school may depend on where you want to work - if your interested in working in a really good restaurant or hotel it might make a difference.
Otherwise I found that my personality actually determined where I worked. Good looking women make the best bartenders in many situations (for obvious reasons). Good looking, well built young guys are good for gay bars for the same reasons.
Sometimes you have to be the bartender/bouncer (if you work in THAT type of bar).
So aside from the bartending skills themselves, I would ask myself what else I bring to the job - knowledge/interest in sports? Good listener/sense of humor? Mixologist/therapist? .........Huge-ass biceps???
PS - If you want to work in a big city & speak other languages that would be a big plus for hotels/good restaurants
