I am thinking about going to the cleveland bartending school. I know I won't come outta there a full fledged bartender, but does it help getting your "foot in the door"?

Any knowledge or personal experience will help. icon_smile.gif

As someone who spent several years as a professional recruiting liaison, I always recommend you look first and foremost at what resources a program offers its graduates for finding jobs. Contact the admissions person at this school and ask for contact information of (more than one!) alumni, then talk to those alumni. If they don't make themselves available... bad sign. If they don't have work anymore... bad sign. If they don't have something good to say about the program... bad sign.

Otherwise, go for it. My brother has been in that business for years and my impression is... you cannot NOT find a job. However, you usually DO have to put in your dues to get to the right places where the tips are astronomical.

I LOVED tending bar (except for the smoke - which may not be an issue anymore) but I didn't go to school for it. I just learned on the job. The thing about school may depend on where you want to work - if your interested in working in a really good restaurant or hotel it might make a difference.
Otherwise I found that my personality actually determined where I worked. Good looking women make the best bartenders in many situations (for obvious reasons). Good looking, well built young guys are good for gay bars for the same reasons.
Sometimes you have to be the bartender/bouncer (if you work in THAT type of bar).
So aside from the bartending skills themselves, I would ask myself what else I bring to the job - knowledge/interest in sports? Good listener/sense of humor? Mixologist/therapist? .........Huge-ass biceps??? icon_lol.gif Good Luck

PS - If you want to work in a big city & speak other languages that would be a big plus for hotels/good restaurants
