Handkerchiefs in the back pockets

I'm curious to see how many people here use or take notice of this method of discreetly advertising you're gay. Is it still relevant?

Now, my campus has just resumed class, and today I saw a really cute young guy with a handkerchief very neatly folded and tucked into his back right pocket. Ostensibly, it could be that he just uses one. But how many 18-23 year olds use a handkerchief? icon_idea.gif

It's too cold here (-17) to be used as a bandanna. And the color is white. (significance..?) Plus, usually you don't wear a button up shirt, black peacoat AND a bandanna.

I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for him on campus...

I was just looking it up wikipedia, curious about what white was. I had no idea this code was so complicated. "Muave"? "Olive"? icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Omce AIDS came on the scene, they pretty much fell into disuse. Before that, we used them. Especially out at the bars.

Maybe this guy is just coming out and learned about this and thought it might be a discrete way of getting some attention. Was it a PLAIN white hanky or a "bandana" that was white (bandanas are generally used for the code, you know the ones with the kind of paisleyish pattern on them). If it was truly a plain white hanky, he probably just carry's one around. Among the general gay population, yes they are out of style and a lot of people don't even know anything about it except what they've read in books or seen in movies but in the fetish community, it's still a part of your "signal" system so be careful where you walk around with a red hanky in your back right pocket! icon_lol.gif

As others here have stated, the hanky isn't so much to advertise that you ARE gay, but rather what KIND of gay, in terms of sexual preference and availability. It's use is normally limited to gay gathering places, where everyone is assumed to be gay.

malefeet has posted a link here to another RJ thread where this was discussed in detail.

We still use the hanky code, it is called the internet.

Instead of wearing black, you log on to Recon
Instead of wearing yellow, you log on to PissBuddies
Instead of wearing purple, you log on to MagicUnicornSparkleLove

Though, I wonder about Caslon's explanation. Did AIDS end it, or was it that gay culture became much more public? Even boys in Iowa can find anything and everything on the internet, and those who live in or near cities can find someone at any queer gathering place. Who needs lavender gingham when there is this openness? What role AIDS played in that shift is another discussion though. icon_biggrin.gif

I personally think the bandana thing on the guy you saw at school probably has more of a punk rock reference than to the traditional hanky code.

If that's true, then they probably won't be wearing them when they learn where that originated from; it's not just a fashion thing.
Same thing with those idiots wearing their baggy pants loose and very low. No, Marky Mark didn't start it, he took the idea and ran with it.

... why does this smell like Laud Humphries and the Tea Room Trade?

    symbollic-interactionism at its best.

also: I've never heard of this code and based upon its implications ... most men in the south are coding themselves as queers?

Cas is right, this was very much a thing of the 70's and early 80's. It seems to have gone out over night. I saw one on a bear at Pei Wei's the other night and thought, humm, new in town? You never see them today. Maybe it's a new fad that will start up again..icon_cool.gif I think the one you wear for good ol' plain Hot Sex is no hanky at all.
I'll have to take note of this.

I've been letting my hair grow out, and it's so windy up here that I often just put it in a bandana and tie it back, or have one in my pocket.

:/ wouldn't want anyone to mistake my brown bandana for a love of getting shat on.

yeah, wearing a bandana in your back pocket TOTALLY originated from the gay community.

it couldn't have been guys who actually used them as rags and hankies just putting them in their pockets because it's convenient.

    think, jeez.
