reppaT saidI've been able to play some of it, and it is amazing.
FF XIII’s protagonist is Lightning, a woman. Unfortunately, the black character, Sazh, is not the protagonist, though he is a playable character. The only annoying stereotype (if you want to call it that) is the guy's afro. The build I played had a chocobo living in his 'fro, which I thought was odd even for a Final Fantasy title. I've always viewed chocobo's as large, mountable chickens, so I was a little offended, but I know Square meant no harm when they developed the character. Snow's the stud who's into guns and bikes. The summoner is sweet, too.
Heh, I meant 'protagonist' as in part of the main party. So yeah, playable.
I believe there was Barrett from FF7 and Fujin from FF8 both of whom are recognizably black
Ah yeah. Barrett. Though he didn't really strike me as black. I dunno. For some reason I assumed he was one of the darker skinned asian races.
But then again, considering the very limited 3d tech back then in FF7 it's easy to mistake that, especially given that I grew up to seeing people of that very different skin color and features here too and they had always been Asian, not Black.
I do now remember his VERY brief cameo in FF7: Advent Children in which it's really more obvious that he is black. (As his hair is now in cornrows and not the Zangef style mohawk as evident in the game itself). I missed it because his appearance happened in the middle of a very action-packed scene LOL.
So yeah, not the first then.
My bad. But... if Barrett was black, he was actually more caricatured and stereotyped then.
